Three NFL preseason games tonight, and all three get the full Square Tax treatment. QB rotations, starter plans, depth, market movement and the number that actually matters. Plus the MLB and WNBA evening scan.

Football being back does not mean discipline gets thrown out the window.

Tonight’s NFL slate features Miami at Washington, Tampa Bay at the Jets and Denver at Atlanta, all at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Miami -3.5 | Total 35.5

Not an Official Play

This is one of those preseason games where the side initially makes sense, but -3.5 forces us to respect the price.

Miami enters with Malik Willis in an offense he has now had an entire offseason to absorb. Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley has talked about Willis becoming increasingly comfortable as Miami has cycled back through its installation, and that matters in a preseason setting where second- and third-unit quarterback competence can decide an entire second half.

Washington has four quarterbacks in camp — Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota, Sam Hartman and Athan Kaliakmanis — and the Commanders also just completed joint work with Miami. That joint-practice element cuts both ways: coaches may feel they already got high-value work from their primary units, and preseason playing-time decisions can change the handicap quickly.

The market has Miami laying 3.5, and that hook matters. We would be much more interested at -3 or better. Once we cross a field goal in a low-total preseason game, the price is doing some of the handicapping for us.

The total has also ticked to 35.5, the only change from the board we checked earlier. That doesn’t create enough value by itself to force a total play.

Square Tax verdict: Miami has the stronger lean, but -3.5 is not enough edge for an Official Play.

Jets -6.5 | Total 34.5

This is the clearest personnel imbalance on tonight’s board.

Jets coach Aaron Glenn has been unusually direct about his preseason approach: everyone is playing. New York is installing new systems, and Glenn wants live reps, execution, ball security, tackling and discipline. He has discussed getting veterans meaningful preseason snaps rather than treating the game like an extended walkthrough.

That matters because the quarterback situation on the other side is considerably thinner.

Baker Mayfield is not expected to play. Backup Jake Browning suffered a back issue in practice, leaving Tampa Bay preparing for the possibility of Connor Bazelak and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels handling essentially all the quarterback work. Tampa Bay itself acknowledged that those two could receive far more snaps than originally planned.

That is exactly the type of preseason situation we look for.

We aren't betting the Jets because they're the Jets. We're betting the structure of the game:

New York intends to play its roster aggressively. Tampa Bay's starting quarterback is sitting. Its No. 2 quarterback has been dealing with an injury. The remaining quarterback workload could fall heavily on two inexperienced options.

The risk is obvious: -6.5 is a large preseason number. Once starters disappear, turnovers, busted coverages and fourth-quarter roster chaos can make seven points feel enormous.

But at -6.5, we're still below the touchdown.

At -7 or worse, pass rather than chase.

That distinction matters.

Denver -3.5 | Total 40.5

This may be the most interesting game to watch and the easiest one for us not to bet.

Denver coach Sean Payton plans to give his starters roughly 15 snaps, and he has made it clear that he takes preseason competition seriously. Payton is 7-2 in preseason games during his Denver tenure and continues to emphasize competitive reps.

But there is an important wrinkle:

Bo Nix is not playing. Denver plans to hold his preseason debut until next week.

Atlanta, meanwhile, plans to start Tua Tagovailoa, with the Falcons' primary unit expected to get approximately one series or 10 plays. Cooper Rush and Jack Strand are then scheduled to rotate in behind him. Michael Penix Jr. has not yet been cleared for full 11-on-11 work.

So we have competing signals.

Denver has the more established preseason coaching profile and intends to play its starters.

Atlanta gets a short burst from Tua and then moves into a quarterback rotation that isn't obviously overmatched.

At Denver -3.5, we're being asked to cross the field goal without a clean enough quarterback-rotation advantage to justify it.

The 40.5 total is also substantially higher than the other two games tonight. That's not automatically an Under signal; it simply means the market already expects more offense.

There isn't enough mispricing here.

Watching football is free. Betting a game because it's on television isn't.

Two games tonight:

Dallas Wings at Indiana Fever — 7:30 p.m. ET
Indiana -8.5, total roughly 185.5–186.5. The market opened Indiana around -5.5 and has pushed significantly toward the Fever.

At this point, we're interested in the number, not trying to declare Dallas the better basketball team.

Three points of movement from the opener is substantial. Buying Indiana after the market has already pushed the Fever through multiple numbers is exactly how bettors end up paying for information everybody else already knows.

Dallas +8.5 is a lean, not an Official Play.

Portland Fire at Seattle Storm — 10:00 p.m. ET
Seattle roughly -3.5, total 179.5.

Seattle's record makes laying points unattractive on the surface, but the market has still installed the Storm as the favorite. That's information worth respecting rather than blindly fading.

We don't have enough to separate market signal from actual value.

There is still a substantial Friday-night baseball board, but nothing remaining cleared our Official Play threshold by publication time. Current MLB pricing remains fluid as lineups settle and books adjust.

That's intentional.

With NFL preseason information giving us a more identifiable personnel edge tonight, we're not going hunting through the baseball card merely because we want another selection.
