The Daily Tax Report

Friday, September 4, 2026

Thursday’s Official Play missed when Illinois won by 19 but failed to cover the large number.

That moves the recent Official Play run to 4-3 since Sunday.

The secondary board, however, was excellent:

UMass +29.5 — won outright
UMass–Rutgers Over — cashed
Colorado +6.5 — cashed
Colorado–Georgia Tech Under 51.5 — cashed

The Official ledger remains separate, but the Strong Leans and Leans went 4-0.

How We Grade the Board

Official Play — strongest position and the only tier that counts toward the official ledger.

Strong Lean — very close to Official Play territory, but one or two factors keep it just short.

Lean — still a playable preference, but with a smaller edge or more uncertainty.

A Strong Lean or Lean is still actionable for readers interested in that game. It simply did not clear the threshold required to become an Official Play.

🟢 Official Play

Fresno State +21.5 at USC

Play: +21.5 or better

USC is attracting the majority of public spread tickets, but Fresno State is drawing a larger share of the money at several books.

That is the type of split worth monitoring: the public is comfortable laying the large number with USC, while larger wagers are showing up on the underdog.

USC clearly owns the superior roster and offensive ceiling. Fresno State, however, returns enough experience and defensive competence to make more than three touchdowns meaningful.

The number also creates room for a late score or for USC to ease off once the game is controlled.

Official Play: Fresno State +21.5

Do not chase below +21.

🟢 Official Play

Fresno State–USC Over 51.5

Play to: 52.5

This was one of the preferred early-week positions, and the market has continued to support the Over.

The basic game script is straightforward: USC should score enough to carry a large portion of the total, while Fresno State only needs to contribute modestly for the game to clear the number.

A score in the neighborhood of 38-20 would cash both the side and the total.

There is some risk that Fresno attempts to shorten the game, but the current price still leaves enough room to support the Over.

Official Play: Over 51.5

🟡 Strong Lean

Eastern Michigan -2.5 vs. San Jose State

Playable to -3 — no higher

Eastern Michigan remains the preferred side at the current number.

The concern is market movement. Eastern opened higher and has been bet down through the key number of 3, which signals meaningful support for San Jose State.

That does not automatically eliminate Eastern Michigan, but it reduces confidence enough to keep this below Official Play status.

Eastern still benefits from home field and a favorable number at -2.5.

Strong Lean — Eastern Michigan -2.5
Playable at -3
Pass above -3

🟡 Strong Lean

Toledo +10.5 at Michigan State

Michigan State is attracting the majority of public spread tickets, yet the number has moved down toward Toledo.

That reverse-line movement is notable.

Michigan State owns the stronger recruiting profile and more overall resources, but Toledo has enough experience and stability to make double digits appealing.

Strong Lean — Toledo +10.5

🟡 Lean

Toledo–Michigan State Under 48.5

The total has moved down from its opener, with larger wagers showing support for the Under.

Both teams are working through change, and early-season uncertainty can favor a lower-scoring game.

Lean — Under 48.5

🔴 Pass

Miami -24.5 at Stanford

Miami was attractive at -23.5.

The market has now moved to -24.5, beyond the preferred cutoff.

That matters.

The matchup has not changed, but the price has.

Miami may still win comfortably, but the current number is no longer the same wager that was attractive earlier in the week.

Pass — Miami -24.5

⚾ MLB

Nothing on the baseball board rates more strongly than tonight’s football opportunities.

There are playable MLB opinions, but no need to dilute the card.

No MLB Official Play.

Tonight’s Miami decision is a clean example of one of the central lessons in the College Football Betting Guide.

Finding the right team is not enough.

The price still matters.

Miami at -23.5 and Miami at -24.5 involve the same players, coaches and matchup.

They are not necessarily the same wager.
