THE DAILY TAX REPORT

Saturday Night Board — Home Dogs, Defensive Football and a Number We’ve Been Waiting On

The early Saturday card has been a mixed bag.

The Michigan–Oklahoma first-half Under 21.5 got home comfortably. Penn State controlled Temple but allowed a late touchdown that killed the -23.5 cover. Old Dominion never seriously threatened the number against Virginia Tech.

Cal and Memphis are still part of the afternoon story, so we’ll grade everything properly when those games are finished.

For tonight, we’re keeping the card relatively tight.

No baseball.

No reaching for action.

TENNESSEE AT GEORGIA TECH

7:00 p.m. ET

🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: GEORGIA TECH +12.5

+13 would obviously be even better

We circled this game this morning when Georgia Tech was getting 11.5.

Now we’re getting 12.5, with the possibility of 13 depending on the book.

That is a meaningful improvement.

Tennessee unquestionably has the better roster. The Volunteers were explosive in Week 1 and can run the football.

But this is a very different assignment.

Freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon is making his first true road start, and he’s doing it against a Georgia Tech team that badly needs a response after a disappointing opener. Contemporary Tennessee coverage itself has framed this as Brandon’s first real road test rather than another tune-up.

Georgia Tech’s best path is exactly what we want from a double-digit home dog: run the football, shorten possessions and keep Tennessee from turning the game into a track meet.

We don’t need Georgia Tech to be better.

We need them to avoid losing by two touchdowns.

A game like 31–23, 34–24 or 30–20 works just fine.

Georgia Tech +12.5

Play to: +10.5
Best case: grab +13 if it appears

ILLINOIS STATE AT NORTHERN ILLINOIS

7:00 p.m. ET

🟡 STRONG LEAN: NORTHERN ILLINOIS +3.5

This number jumped out immediately.

Northern Illinois is a home underdog to an FCS opponent.

That sounds wrong until you look at who Illinois State actually is.

Illinois State is not a cupcake. The Redbirds are ranked among the top FCS programs and reached the FCS national championship game last season.

So we understand why the market respects them.

But NIU’s price is also being heavily influenced by what happened last week.

The Huskies were obliterated 40–0 by Iowa.

That performance was awful.

The question is whether one terrible road performance against a Big Ten opponent justifies making NIU more than a field-goal dog at home against an FCS team.

We’re not convinced.

And this is another Week 1-to-Week 2 situation where we expect some correction. NIU’s offense cannot possibly be satisfied with what it put on film, and playing at home against Illinois State is an entirely different assignment than dealing with Iowa.

The hook is important.

We’re not nearly as interested at +2.5.

🟡 STRONG LEAN

Northern Illinois +3.5

A small outright-upset possibility exists here as well.

OHIO STATE AT TEXAS

7:30 p.m. ET

Texas around -1.5
Total around 50.5

There are two separate handicaps here.

SIDE: TEXAS

🟡 LEAN: TEXAS -1.5

Texas is where we lean.

Arch Manning is not the same quarterback who looked overwhelmed against Ohio State in his first collegiate start last season. He grew considerably down the stretch and looked sharp again in the opener.

Texas also gets this game in Austin.

But we aren’t comfortable enough to make Texas Official because Ohio State has the single biggest matchup problem on the field:

Jeremiah Smith.

How does Texas cover him without changing the entire defense?

Shade help toward Smith and Ohio State can attack the other matchups.

Leave him isolated and Smith can change the game with one snap.

Ohio State’s offensive line versus the Texas defensive front may ultimately determine whether Julian Sayin has enough time to exploit those options. Even Ohio State-focused analysis has identified the offensive line as perhaps the central matchup tonight.

So we lean Texas.

We do not trust Texas enough to put it on the official ledger.

🟡 LEAN

Texas -1.5

TOTAL: UNDER 50.5

🟡 STRONG LEAN: UNDER 50.5

This is the part of the game we like more.

Last year these teams played a 14–7 game.

We are not predicting another 21-point total, but both teams possess enough defensive talent to prevent this from becoming the 31–30 shootout that marquee offensive names sometimes make bettors envision.

Texas should be better offensively than it was in last year's meeting.

Arch is better.

Texas has weapons everywhere.

Ohio State has Smith.

But both defenses can rush the passer, both secondaries have NFL talent, and neither coaching staff needs to turn this into chaos.

The score range we keep coming back to is something like:

Texas 24, Ohio State 20.

That gets comfortably underneath 50.5.

Smith is the biggest danger to the Under because he can manufacture explosive points even against good coverage.

That is why we’re stopping at Strong Lean rather than Official.

🟡 STRONG LEAN

Ohio State–Texas Under 50.5

LATE BOARD

We still have games later tonight, including Arkansas at Utah, and there is no reason to lock ourselves into every late number right now.

Utah is laying around 12.5 in a difficult home environment, while Arkansas is stepping significantly upward in competition. Current analysis is generally giving Utah the roster and home-field advantage, but nearly two touchdowns is enough that we’re not forcing it into this report.

📚 THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL BETTING GUIDE

Today has already provided another lesson in why the number matters.

We wanted Georgia Tech earlier at +11.5.

Instead of forcing it, we waited.

Now we're getting +12.5, with +13 potentially available.

Same team.

Same matchup.

Better bet.

That is exactly what market discipline is supposed to look like.
