THE DAILY TAX REPORT
Friday Night College Football — One Official Side, Two Strong Leans, No Forced Baseball
Two NFL nights. Two good reads.
Wednesday, New England +3.5 cashed when Seattle won by exactly three.
Thursday, 49ers–Rams Under 48.5 was never seriously threatened in San Francisco’s 27–7 win.
Those two games gave us two different reminders: key numbers matter, and sometimes the market itself gives you a reason to either look the other way or stay off a favorite entirely.
Now we move to Friday night college football.
There are five games on the board, but only three that we believe deserve serious attention.
🏈 RUTGERS AT BOSTON COLLEGE
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. ET
Boston College -2.5 to -3.5
Total: 53.5–54
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: BOSTON COLLEGE -3 OR BETTER
This is our strongest position of the night.
Rutgers entered last week as roughly a four-touchdown favorite against UMass and proceeded to lose 37–21 at home.
That wasn’t merely an upset.
Rutgers turned it over four times, allowed more than 200 rushing yards, struggled to tackle, generated little consistent pressure and allowed UMass to score 30 consecutive points.
Now Rutgers has another problem.
Starting quarterback Dylan Lonergan is injured and has not practiced this week. AJ Surace will make his first career start tonight. Lonergan may only be available in an emergency role.
Surace showed some ability when he entered last week, so this is not an automatic fade simply because Rutgers is changing quarterbacks.
But asking a first-time starter to go on the road after the entire team just melted down against UMass is not an ideal setup.
Boston College has its own problems. The Eagles were handled by Cincinnati in their opener, so we aren’t pretending BC looked dominant.
The difference is the matchup.
Rutgers’ run defense was poor last season and looked poor again against UMass. Boston College showed enough on the ground in Week 1 to make that weakness relevant tonight. Rutgers also struggled to generate a pass rush, which gives BC quarterback Mason McKenzie a much cleaner path than he had in the opener.
There is also the emotional home setting.
This is Boston College’s annual Red Bandanna Game, honoring Welles Crowther on the 25th anniversary of September 11.
That is not why we’re betting BC.
It is simply another element in a home environment where Rutgers is already dealing with plenty.
THE NUMBER
This part matters.
We are seeing Boston College -2.5, -3 and -3.5 depending on the sportsbook.
After Wednesday night, nobody reading this report should need another reminder about the importance of three.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Boston College -3 or better
Best: -2.5
Playable: -3
At -3.5: still a BC lean, but we strongly prefer staying on the right side of the key number.
🏈 VILLANOVA AT LOUISVILLE
Kickoff: 7:00 p.m. ET
Louisville -37.5
Total: 56.5
🟡 STRONG LEAN: LOUISVILLE -37.5
Yes.
Thirty-seven and a half points is enormous.
We know.
But enormous spreads do not automatically mean the underdog has value.
Sometimes the gap really is that large.
Louisville just played No. 9 Ole Miss to the final snap in a 41–38 loss. The Cardinals erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, generated explosive offense and showed they can score against legitimate Power-conference competition.
Now they drop several levels in class.
Villanova is an FCS program that lost its opener to William & Mary and then barely escaped Bucknell 17–16. Their secondary has allowed opponents to complete passes at a high rate, which is a dangerous weakness against a Jeff Brohm offense.
Louisville has also won 26 consecutive games against FCS opponents.
The handicap is straightforward.
If Louisville plays anything close to the offensive level it showed against Ole Miss, Villanova is going to have enormous difficulty keeping pace.
The question is not whether Louisville is capable of winning by 40.
They absolutely are.
The question is whether Louisville keeps attacking long enough to cover 37.5, or whether the starters disappear early enough to create garbage-time danger.
That is the only reason this stays below Official status.
🟡 STRONG LEAN
Louisville -37.5
A final in the neighborhood of 45–7 or 49–10 would not surprise us.
This is one of those games where the favorite may effectively be able to choose the score if it stays aggressive.
🏈 NO. 23 MISSOURI AT KANSAS
Kickoff: 8:00 p.m. ET
Missouri -4.5
Total: 51.5
🟡 STRONG LEAN: MISSOURI -4.5
The Border War is back.
And the number has become more attractive.
Earlier in the week we were looking at Missouri around -5.5.
Tonight we can find -4.5.
That matters.
Our first thought was built partly around Missouri star running back Ahmad Hardy and Kansas’ long-running problems defending the run.
Hardy, however, is still expected to miss tonight’s game while Missouri waits for his return. Current previews are discussing Missouri playing without him rather than expecting a normal workload.
So we handicap this game assuming Hardy does not play.
And we still like Missouri.
Why?
Because Kansas’ run-defense problems are not something that appeared last week.
Over the last several seasons, Kansas has consistently been vulnerable on the ground, particularly against stronger competition. Missouri does not need Hardy alone to attack that weakness. The Tigers ran for more than 200 yards in their opener without him and have enough offensive-line talent and depth to keep the rushing game functional.
Kansas did dominate LIU on the ground last week.
That should be acknowledged.
But holding LIU down does not erase several years of issues against Power-conference rushing attacks.
The other half of the handicap is Missouri’s defense.
We trust Missouri more to force Kansas into difficult downs than we trust Kansas to consistently win at the line of scrimmage against Missouri.
There is rivalry volatility here.
That keeps Missouri below Official status.
This is not a neutral November SEC game. Kansas will be fully invested, the environment will be hostile, and rivalry games can create strange outcomes.
But at -4.5, Missouri no longer needs to cover a touchdown.
That makes the number attractive enough for us.
🟡 STRONG LEAN
Missouri -4.5
If Hardy unexpectedly dresses and looks capable of carrying a meaningful workload, that would only strengthen the Missouri case.
⚾ MLB — FRIDAY NIGHT
There are plenty of baseball games tonight.
We are not forcing one.
Milwaukee is expensive.
Boston is expensive.
Tampa Bay is expensive.
There are several other games where the price, pitching matchup or September roster uncertainty does not give us enough separation.
That means:

📚 THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL BETTING GUIDE
The first two NFL games this week have already given us perfect examples of what the guide is built around.
New England +3.5 won because the half-point mattered.
Then the Rams sat at a suspiciously short -3.5 despite looking like the obvious favorite to many bettors. We stayed away from the side, attacked the Under instead, and San Francisco won outright.
Those are not magic signals.
They are reminders to respect price, key numbers, matchup context and what the market is actually offering you.
