THE DAILY TAX REPORT
Saturday Early Board — Five Officials, One Strong Lean, and No Paying the Logo Tax
Friday night gave us exactly the response we wanted.
Boston College -3 cashed, 28–21.
Missouri -4.5 won by 17.
Louisville -37.5 won by 46.
One Official Play. Two Strong Leans. All three got there.
More importantly, Louisville gave us another reminder about these enormous early-season spreads: a big number is not automatically a bad number. When the talent gap, matchup and scoring ceiling justify it, we are not going to dismiss a favorite just because laying 30, 40 or even more looks uncomfortable.
Now comes Saturday.
Last week’s Saturday card got away from us. We’re not responding by trying to win everything back with 10 plays. We’re responding by tightening the process and attacking the numbers we actually believe are wrong.
And in Week 2, there is another factor we are emphasizing: teams often make their biggest early-season improvement between Game 1 and Game 2. Some Week 1 problems are structural. Others are fixable—timing, tackling, communication, offensive-line cohesion and execution.
That distinction matters today.
🏈 PENN STATE AT TEMPLE
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: PENN STATE -23.5
Official only at -23.5 or better
Yes, this is technically a road game.
No, this is not exactly a normal campus road environment.
Temple hosts Penn State at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, and the talent disparity between these rosters remains enormous.
The bigger reason we like Penn State, though, is what we expect from Matt Campbell’s team in Game 2.
Penn State was already relatively clean in the opener. Campbell specifically praised the communication and low-penalty performance, and his comments this week focused heavily on improving details rather than fixing major structural problems.
Temple deserves some respect. K.C. Keeler has made the program more disciplined, the Owls return plenty of experience, and this should be a better Temple team than some of the versions we’ve seen in recent years.
But there remains a major quarterback and overall talent gap. Temple is still rotating quarterbacks without a clear established starter, while Penn State brings an elite defense and substantially more explosive offensive talent. One Temple-focused preview still landed on a 38–3 Penn State prediction.
We don’t need anything that extreme.
We need Penn State to handle an inferior opponent by roughly four touchdowns.
THE NUMBER MATTERS
At -23.5, this is an Official Play.
At -24 or higher, it becomes a Strong Lean.
Twenty-four is not 3 or 7, but once we are laying more than three touchdowns, we are not donating another half-point for no reason.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Penn State -23.5
🏈 OLD DOMINION AT VIRGINIA TECH
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: OLD DOMINION +19.5
Here is where the market can overreact to one Saturday.
Virginia Tech annihilated VMI 73–3 last week.
Fine.
VMI is not Old Dominion.
And one year ago, Old Dominion beat Virginia Tech 45–26 in Blacksburg.
Virginia Tech is unquestionably improved. James Franklin has upgraded the roster, quarterback play appears better, and the Hokies should be significantly more competent than last year's team.
But are they suddenly roughly 40 points better than Old Dominion than they were one year ago?
That is essentially what this swing asks us to believe.
Even Virginia Tech-oriented analysis acknowledges ODU represents a substantial jump from VMI, and the market was sitting closer to Virginia Tech -18.5 in parts of the week.
Old Dominion quarterback Colton Henicle also brings a running dimension that can extend drives and shorten a game. That matters when we're holding almost three touchdowns.
Virginia Tech may get revenge.
They may win comfortably.
They can win by two touchdowns and we still cash.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Old Dominion +19.5
🏈 CAL AT SYRACUSE
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: CAL +3.5
This is one where we are deliberately not overreacting to Week 1.
Cal looked bad against UCLA.
The tackling was poor. The run defense was gashed. Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele injured his ankle. Losing the starting center created communication problems.
Those things happened.
And the market punished Cal for them.
Cal went from being a short favorite in earlier markets to catching +3.5 today.
But now comes Game 2.
This is exactly the kind of spot where we have to separate fixable Week 1 mistakes from fatal weaknesses.
Cal has spent the week emphasizing tackling, run fits and fundamentals. Sagapolutele's health is something to monitor, but reports describe Cal as relatively healthy overall apart from running back Carter Vargas being doubtful.
Syracuse deserves credit for destroying New Hampshire 66–3.
But New Hampshire is not Cal.
And even Syracuse-side analysis expects a much more competitive matchup today.
The most important thing for us is the number.
If this is a close ACC game—and we believe it is—+3.5 is enormously different from +2.5.
We get the field goal plus the hook.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Cal +3.5
If the market falls to +3, the bet becomes less attractive. We specifically want that hook.
🏈 MICHIGAN AT OKLAHOMA
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: FIRST HALF UNDER 21.5
We aren't asking Michigan to cover.
We aren't asking Oklahoma to cover.
We're betting what both teams have shown us about the matchup.
Michigan's offense was dreadful in its 13–12 win over Western Michigan.
The offensive line struggled. The running game never established itself. Quarterback Bryce Underwood was inconsistent. Michigan repeatedly failed to sustain offense after the opening drive.
What still looked legitimate?
Michigan's defense.
Western Michigan averaged only about 3.2 yards per play against it.
Oklahoma, meanwhile, looked far more polished in a 51–0 demolition of UTEP.
But Brent Venables also owns one of the more complicated defensive systems Michigan's young offense could possibly see immediately after struggling with Western Michigan.
This feels like a game where both defenses can dictate the opening portion.
And we prefer the first-half Under specifically because we avoid some of the late-game nonsense that can destroy a full-game total—short fields, desperation fourth downs and meaningless late scores.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Michigan–Oklahoma 1H Under 21.5
We want 21.5. Don't blindly chase it downward.
🏈 MEMPHIS AT BOISE STATE
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: MEMPHIS +9.5
Stop betting the Boise State logo.
Boise earned its reputation.
For years, this was the Group of Five program nobody wanted to see. The blue turf, the giant-killer reputation, the national relevance—people remember all of it.
But none of that covers 9.5 points today.
We are betting this Boise State team against this Memphis team at this price.
Memphis has looked strong through two weeks. They can run the football, they can pressure the quarterback, and they have enough offensive firepower that we do not believe Boise should be laying essentially double digits in this matchup.
Boise played Oregon tough.
That deserves respect.
But if Oregon's market perception is even slightly inflated, bettors can compound that mistake by giving Boise too much credit for hanging with them.
Our question is simple:
Is Boise really 10 points better than Memphis?
We don't believe so.
Boise can win this game.
That's why we're taking the points.
At +9.5, we're getting protection against a 27–20, 30–23, 31–24 type game—and those outcomes look far more plausible to us than Boise simply running Memphis out of the building.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Memphis +9.5
This is one of our favorite numbers on the entire early board.
🏈 ARIZONA STATE AT TEXAS A&M
🟡 STRONG LEAN: ARIZONA STATE +14.5
This one narrowly misses the Official card.
Texas A&M looked dominant in Week 1, holding Missouri State to only 67 total yards.
That's absurd.
Arizona State also destroyed its opener and quarterback Cutter Boley threw for 387 yards and six touchdowns. More importantly, even Texas A&M coach Mike Elko has emphasized that Arizona State represents an enormous increase in opponent quality and specifically praised the Sun Devils' NFL-level talent at multiple positions.
That makes 14.5 attractive.
But Kyle Field is a legitimate road environment, A&M's defensive ceiling is substantial, and we're not going to turn every opinion we like into an Official Play.
Arizona State gets the hook over two touchdowns.
That's enough for a very strong opinion.
