THE DAILY TAX REPORT

Monday Night Football — One Last Shot to Close Week 1

Week 1 wraps up tonight in Kansas City with a divisional game we’ve been watching for days.

The weekend ledger has taken some punches. After Dallas and the Javonte Williams rushing prop both missed Sunday night, the weekend Official record sits at 5–11 entering Monday night. There were several brutal finishes mixed into that number, but the ledger is the ledger. No hiding it and no rewriting it.

Tonight gives us one more opportunity.

DENVER BRONCOS AT KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

8:15 p.m. ET

The market remains fascinating. Kansas City opened around -2.5, and the board Bryan just captured is now fractured between roughly Chiefs -1.5 and -2.5, depending on the book. The total has climbed from an opener around 42.5 to 43.5.

There is also legitimate disagreement underneath the market. At DraftKings, VSiN reports 66% of spread tickets are on Denver, while Kansas City has only 34% of tickets but 52% of the money. That is a reason to respect the Chiefs side — not automatically bet it — because larger wagers have shown up on Kansas City despite the public preference for Denver.

THE MAHOMES QUESTION

Patrick Mahomes is officially back.

He is nine months removed from ACL and LCL tears, practiced fully throughout the week and carries no injury designation tonight. Nobody should treat him as injured simply because this is his first game back. But this is still his first real NFL game after major knee reconstruction, and his ability to create outside structure is something we have not yet seen post-surgery.

That becomes especially important because Denver brings one of the league’s best pressure groups. The Broncos produced an NFL-best 68 sacks last season, and Kansas City is expected to start undrafted Kahlil Benson at left tackle with Josh Simmons unavailable.

That matchup is the biggest reason I’m willing to take the points.

DENVER'S PATH

Denver doesn’t need Bo Nix to win a shootout with Mahomes.

The Broncos need to pressure without selling out, keep Mahomes from extending downs, avoid explosive plays and make Kansas City operate methodically.

Offensively, Denver added Jaylen Waddle to Courtland Sutton and gives Nix another quick-game/YAC weapon. ESPN expects a committee in the backfield with J.K. Dobbins, RJ Harvey and Jonah Coleman, so there isn’t one Denver runner I want to build tonight’s handicap around.

Denver also enters extremely healthy. The Broncos did not rule out a single player because of injury, and their listed inactives are primarily depth pieces.

OFFICIAL PLAY

Denver Broncos +2.5

We’ve liked Denver at this number since we first examined the Week 1 board, and nothing tonight has convinced me to abandon it.

Kansas City absolutely has advantages: Arrowhead, Andy Reid with an offseason to prepare, Mahomes back, and some respected money showing on the Chiefs.

But Denver's defense gives this ticket multiple ways to survive. If the Broncos can consistently affect Kansas City's left tackle and prevent Mahomes from living outside structure, this should remain a one-possession game deep into the fourth quarter.

Official: Denver +2.5

Play to: +2

If somebody can find +3, grab it. That is substantially better because of the key number.

At +1.5, I would no longer call it the same bet.

PROP WATCH

There are two props I considered strongly.

Bo Nix Over 16.5 rushing yards is interesting. His career average is 23.1 rushing yards per game, and ESPN notes he cleared this number in 10 of 18 games last season. The hesitation is simple: he is returning from the ankle injury that ended his postseason, and we don’t yet know how aggressively Denver will use him as a runner.

Courtland Sutton Over 42.5 receiving yards also has an argument, particularly against a reworked Kansas City secondary, but Jaylen Waddle introduces enough uncertainty into the target distribution that I don't want to force it.

PROP VERDICT: PASS

After yesterday, this is exactly where discipline matters.

We don't need an Official Prop simply because Monday Night Football has a prop menu.

TOTAL — LEAN ONLY

The market has moved Over 42.5 → 43.5, and VSiN reports a notable money-versus-ticket discrepancy toward the Over at Circa.

My matchup instinct originally leaned toward a lower-scoring divisional game, but I’m not interested in fighting that move simply to have another wager.

PASS at 43.5.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL BETTING GUIDE

Our College Football Betting Guide is available for $19.99 standalone and is included with every Tax Code membership.

The entire purpose of the guide is the same principle we’re applying every week: evaluate the matchup and the number rather than betting helmets, rankings or reputation.

And after what we saw this weekend, we're adding another principle to the toolbox:

Don't automatically fear huge favorites.

When an elite roster can score 50, 60 or 70 while its second and third units remain vastly superior to the opponent, a -40 or -50 isn't automatically too many points. The number still has to be handicapped.

Every day somebody pays the Square Tax. Don’t let it be you.
