Thursday, August 13, 2026 — Football Is Back
Six NFL Games. One Official Play. Every Matchup Broken Down.
Preview copy:
NFL preseason football is back tonight, and we're breaking down every game on the board. Starters, quarterback rotations, coaching intent, market reaction and price. One game gave us the combination we wanted.
Odds supplied approximately 5:00 p.m. ET from the current ScoresAndOdds board. Lines can move. Shop for the best available number before wagering.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Houston Texans +1.5 (-120)
Los Angeles Chargers at Houston Texans
Preseason betting is different.
We're not trying to decide which regular-season roster is better.
We're trying to determine:
Who is actually playing?
For how long?
Who has the better quarterback depth?
And has the sportsbook already priced the information into the number?
Houston checks those boxes better than anyone on tonight's board.
C.J. Stroud and many Houston regulars are expected to sit, which means the Texans will lean heavily on their depth. That includes veteran backup Davis Mills and Graham Mertz. Houston has been actively working both quarterbacks throughout camp.
The Chargers are also resting most starters and are expected to lean on Trey Lance and their developmental quarterback depth. That creates a game where backup-quarterback stability becomes especially important.
And then we get to the price.
Our ScoresAndOdds board has:
Chargers -1.5 EVEN
Houston +1.5 -120
Total 37
Other markets today have actually shown Houston favored by 1.5, meaning there has been disagreement across books about which side should even be laying points.
We're getting Houston as the underdog.
That's the side we want.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Houston Texans +1.5 (-120)
If you can find Houston +1 at -110, we prefer that price.
We're willing to pay the standard dime for the protection of the point rather than play the moneyline.
NFL PRESEASON — EVERY GAME
🟡 STRONG LEAN
Indianapolis Colts -3
Indianapolis at New England
This came very close.
Anthony Richardson will start and is scheduled to play the entire first half before Riley Leonard takes over. Daniel Jones and most Indianapolis offensive starters will sit, but giving Richardson two quarters is meaningful preseason information.
New England used its top players heavily during the joint-practice portion of the week, and its preseason opener is expected to feature plenty of younger players and roster battles.
At Colts -2.5, this would have been even more attractive.
At -3, we're sitting on the most important number in football.
That's enough to keep it just below Official status.
🟡 STRONG LEAN — PLAYABLE, NOT OFFICIAL
Indianapolis -3
🟡 STRONG LEAN
Tennessee Titans -6
Tennessee at San Francisco
We liked the situation considerably more than the price.
Cam Ward will play, and San Francisco is not expected to use many starters. That's a legitimate early-game advantage for Tennessee.
But here's the problem:
Ward isn't expected to play much.
Tennessee's defensive starters aren't expected to play much either.
So we're being asked to lay six points based largely on an advantage that may exist for only a small portion of the game.
Once the backups and roster-bubble players take over, that six-point cushion can disappear quickly.
Great information.
Bad enough number that we're staying off the Official ledger.
🟡 STRONG LEAN — PLAYABLE, NOT OFFICIAL
Tennessee -6
🟡 LEAN
Cincinnati Bengals -7
Detroit at Cincinnati
This is probably the most obvious starter mismatch on the board.
Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Chase Brown are all expected to play limited snaps for Cincinnati.
Detroit is going the opposite direction.
Dan Campbell has said most Lions starters will sit, including Jared Goff, with reports suggesting roughly 25–28 regulars could be held out.
If we were handicapping only the first quarter, Cincinnati would be extremely attractive.
We're not.
We're being asked to lay:
Bengals -7
A full touchdown.
And we don't know how much of the game Cincinnati's major personnel advantage will actually exist.
This is exactly how good preseason information becomes a bad wager once the market taxes it.
🟡 LEAN
Cincinnati -7
🔴 PASS
Green Bay Packers -3
Green Bay at Pittsburgh
Green Bay expects to get Jordan Love and healthy starters some preseason work.
Pittsburgh's veteran usage is considerably less certain, and there has been good reason throughout camp to believe Aaron Rodgers won't see meaningful preseason action.
That initially made Green Bay interesting.
Then the market moved the Packers to -3.
We're not getting enough discount anymore.
We have useful information.
We don't have a useful enough number.
🔴 PASS
Green Bay -3
🔴 PASS
Las Vegas Raiders -3
Arizona at Las Vegas
Both clubs plan to use starters.
Arizona has specifically said Jacoby Brissett and the main group should play one drive, possibly two. Gardner Minshew and Kedon Slovis are expected to handle the majority of the quarterback work afterward, with Carson Beck ruled out.
Las Vegas also plans to give its starters action, with Fernando Mendoza expected to receive substantial preseason work.
There's no dramatic playing-time mismatch here.
And laying Raiders -3 gives us no reason to manufacture one.
🔴 PASS
Las Vegas -3
WHY HOUSTON AND NOT THE OTHERS?
This is the most important part of tonight's football card.
Cincinnati may have the biggest starter advantage.
Tennessee may have another clear early-game personnel advantage.
Indianapolis has perhaps the clearest defined quarterback workload.
And yet:
Houston is our Official Play.
Why?
Because preseason handicapping is not simply about finding the biggest personnel advantage.
It's about finding the biggest unpriced advantage.
Cincinnati is laying 7.
Tennessee is laying 6.
Indianapolis is laying 3.
Houston is getting +1.5.
That difference matters.
We're getting points with the team whose quarterback depth we trust more over four quarters instead of laying a large number based on starters who may disappear after a handful of possessions.
That's the bet.
WHY PRESEASON IS DIFFERENT
Regular-season handicapping starts with things like offensive efficiency, defensive matchup, injuries, pace, trenches and quarterback quality.
Preseason adds another layer.
Sometimes an even more important one:
Coach intent.
One coach may want his starters playing two quarters.
Another may not let his quarterback put on a helmet.
One team may have an experienced NFL quarterback running the second unit.
Another may spend the fourth quarter evaluating someone who won't be on the roster two weeks later.
That's why preseason lines can look strange.
And it's why simply betting the team playing more starters can still be a mistake.
Playing-time information matters.
The price attached to that information matters more.
MLB NIGHT BOARD
The baseball board didn't produce anything strong enough to challenge our football play.
🟡 LEAN
Walbert Ureña Over 2.5 Earned Runs (+115)
Texas has the matchup we'd rather attack, and getting plus money to isolate the opposing starter is more attractive than laying heavy juice on the Rangers' team total.
Playable.
Not Official.
🟡 LEAN
Roki Sasaki Over 2.5 Earned Runs (+125)
The plus-money number deserves attention.
But the supporting matchup isn't strong enough to put it on the official ledger.
🟡 LEAN
Bradley Over 2.5 Earned Runs (EVEN)
Another fair price.
Not enough independent support to promote it beyond a lean.
WNBA
🟡 STRONG LEAN
Washington Mystics +6.5
Of the three WNBA games, this remains our preferred number.
We like getting the points more than laying large numbers with Atlanta or New York.
It's playable if you want additional action.
It is not an Official Play.
🔴 PASS
Atlanta -9.5
🔴 PASS
New York Liberty -8.5
Big favorites.
Not enough pricing edge.
FROM THE UPCOMING COLLEGE FOOTBALL BETTING GUIDE
Information Isn't Value Until You Compare It to the Number
Knowing something the casual bettor doesn't know can be useful.
But there's a second question:
Does the sportsbook know it too?
Suppose you learn that a starting quarterback is playing while the opponent is resting its starters.
Useful information.
Now suppose the line moves from -2 to -7.
You didn't lose the information.
You may have lost the value.
That distinction between having an edge in your handicap and having an edge at the betting window is one of the most important lessons in football betting.
And we're seeing it tonight in real time.
BANKROLL REMINDER
We're 3–2 under the tightened Official Play process.
The first three won.
The last two lost.
Tonight's wager gets the exact same unit.
Not more because football is back.
Not more because we've lost two straight.
And certainly not more because we like the matchup.
One wager.
One unit.
Let the process work over time.
