The Daily Tax Report

Tuesday, September 1, 2026

The Square Tax comes into Tuesday riding a 4-0 run over the last two days.

That is exactly the kind of momentum we want, but the objective does not change. We are not increasing volume because we are winning. We are still looking for the cleanest price and matchup combinations on the board.

🟢 Official Play

San Diego Padres ML

Current range: roughly -130 to -135
Play to: -140

We are going right back to San Diego.

The Padres shut Cincinnati out 5-0 last night, and the matchup still gives us enough to work with today. Randy Vásquez enters 10-6 with a 4.02 ERA, while Nick Lodolo carries a 5.24 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. San Diego is 7-2 when Vásquez starts as a moneyline favorite.

This is not Michael King versus Brady Singer again, so the starting-pitching edge is smaller than Monday. But the price is also reasonable, San Diego has the better overall profile, and the Padres are coming directly off a game in which the lineup produced and the pitching staff controlled Cincinnati from start to finish.

Official Play: Padres ML — play to -140.

🟡 Strong Leans

Philadelphia Phillies ML

Philadelphia is the hottest team on tonight’s board that automatically triggers our streak filter.

The Phillies have won five straight and 14 of their last 16, including last night’s 2-1 win in Arizona. Jesús Luzardo has also been outstanding recently, allowing two earned runs or fewer in each of his last five starts.

The reason this stops short of Official is Eduardo Rodríguez. He enters 14-4 with a 2.50 ERA, and Arizona has gone 12-3 in his starts as a moneyline underdog. That is a legitimate counterweight, not something we ignore just because Philadelphia is hot.

Classification: Strong Lean — Phillies ML

Tampa Bay Rays ML

Tampa is 82-55 compared with the Mets at 62-76 and had won four straight before dropping a tight 3-2 game last night. The current price around the mid -120s is substantially more attractive than the heavy number we saw Monday.

Freddy Peralta’s 5.11 ERA prevents this from becoming an Official Play. Sean Manaea has actually been better by the season numbers, so this is primarily a team-strength and price play rather than a starting-pitcher play.

Classification: Strong Lean — Rays ML

Atlanta Braves ML

Atlanta’s seven-game winning streak ended Monday, but the Braves are still coming off a 6-1 homestand and face a Washington bullpen that has been one of the league’s biggest liabilities.

The hesitation is the starting matchup. AJ Smith-Shawver owns a 5.93 ERA and Jake Irvin is at 5.62. Neither starter gives us the type of pitching edge we want for an Official Play.

Atlanta remains the side, but the price around -150 combined with shaky starting pitching makes this a lean rather than a ledger position.

Classification: Strong Lean — Braves ML

🟡 Leans

Pittsburgh Pirates ML

Paul Skenes against Logan Webb is a quality pitching matchup, but this is not the enormous Skenes mismatch the name recognition might suggest. Their ERAs are nearly identical — 3.79 for Skenes and 3.72 for Webb.

Pittsburgh is the better team and San Francisco is only 57-81, so the Pirates are the preferred side. At roughly -155, though, there is not enough separation for Official status.

Classification: Lean — Pirates ML

Detroit Tigers ML

Troy Melton’s 1.86 ERA against Andrew Morris’ 3.82 immediately gets our attention at essentially a pick’em price.

The problem is Detroit has lost six straight road games and Minnesota leads the season series 6-2. Those are meaningful red flags against an otherwise appealing pitching edge.

Classification: Lean — Tigers ML

🔴 Passes

Cleveland Guardians vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Cleveland is laying around -165 to -180 despite Toronto starter Spencer Miles carrying a 2.92 ERA compared with Gavin Williams at 3.98.

That price does not match the pitching matchup well enough for us.

Classification: Pass

Seattle Mariners vs. Boston Red Sox

Boston was attractive Monday. Tonight is different.

Bryan Woo has a 4.36 ERA, while Boston is turning to an inexperienced arm. That eliminates the clean pitching advantage we had yesterday.

Classification: Pass

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs

Milwaukee is the better season-long team, but Matthew Boyd owns the starting-pitcher advantage over Robert Gasser. Chicago is also coming off a nine-home-run explosion Monday.

Too many conflicting signals.

Classification: Pass

Athletics vs. Texas Rangers

Texas is close to -200 despite MacKenzie Gore carrying a 4.40 ERA. That is simply too much price without a dominant starter.

Classification: Pass

Cardinals vs. Dodgers

Los Angeles is the superior club, but Eric Lauer’s 4.78 ERA is worse than Michael McGreevy’s 3.86, yet the Dodgers are still laying around -180.

That is reputation being priced heavily into the market.

Classification: Pass

We went 4-0 the last two days by being selective. There is absolutely no reason to abandon that approach now.
