THE DAILY TAX REPORT

Tuesday, September 8 — Stay Selective Now, Football Takes Over Tomorrow

Monday night gave us exactly the kind of lesson we want to carry into the rest of football season.

SMU turned the football over four times at Florida State and still escaped with a 27–24 victory. Because the newsletter went out at SMU -3, the Official Play goes into the ledger as a push. Bettors who grabbed the later -2.5 cashed, but we grade the number we published.

The bigger takeaway: Florida State received four extra possessions at home and still couldn't win. That puts the Seminoles firmly on our fade-watch list going forward. We will not blindly bet against them every week, but their games automatically deserve deeper review until either Florida State improves or the market fully adjusts.

Now we turn to Tuesday baseball — and we stay selective.

⚾ MLB — TUESDAY CARD

🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: Milwaukee Brewers -1.5

This is the best pitching mismatch on tonight’s board.

Milwaukee sends Jacob Misiorowski, who enters 14–5 with a 1.97 ERA, against David Peterson, who carries a 5.39 ERA. Milwaukee also owns one of baseball’s better pitching staffs, while Chicago’s bullpen has become a legitimate problem late in games.

There is one reason this is not completely automatic: the Cubs saw Misiorowski recently and actually got to him for five runs. Rematches matter.

But Peterson was hit hard in that same recent series, and Milwaukee has the pitching edge, bullpen edge and home-field advantage.

We are not laying roughly -200 on the moneyline.

We’ll use the run line instead.

🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY

Milwaukee Brewers -1.5

🟡 STRONG LEAN: Houston Astros Moneyline

This is the best underdog value we found.

Houston is getting roughly +120 to +125, and the starting-pitching matchup gives the Astros a legitimate path to winning outright.

That makes this exactly the kind of plus-money position we want to investigate instead of simply backing the more popular home favorite.

The concern is Philadelphia’s offense and Houston’s bullpen situation. That keeps it one step below the Official ledger.

🟡 STRONG LEAN

Houston Astros ML +120 or better

At shorter than roughly +110, the value starts disappearing.

🟡 LEAN: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline

Cleveland remains interesting around even money.

Tanner Bibee gets the start against Baltimore, and while Cleveland recently swept Detroit, Baltimore finally snapped its six-game losing streak Monday with a 6–4 victory over the Guardians.

That matters.

Yesterday we were looking at Baltimore as a team in free fall. Today, that streak is over, so we don't pretend the handicap hasn't changed at all.

Still, Cleveland is getting a fair price, and Bibee gives us enough reason to remain interested.

🟡 LEAN

Cleveland Guardians ML

Not enough separation for an Official Play.

🟡 LEAN: Cincinnati Reds Team Total UNDER 2.5

This is how we want to attack the Dodgers game.

Los Angeles has won five straight, which automatically triggers our deeper-review rule. But the Dodgers are roughly -300, and there is no reason to lay that kind of money.

Instead, isolate the pitching matchup.

Tarik Skubal enters with a 2.86 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 2.48 FIP, while Cincinnati has struggled badly offensively. The Reds rank near the bottom of baseball in several major offensive categories.

Rather than asking Los Angeles to cover a run line, we can simply ask Cincinnati not to score three.

🟡 LEAN

Reds Team Total UNDER 2.5

If you can find plus money, even better.

🔴 PASS: Boston Red Sox ML

The surface-level angle is tempting.

Boston has been hot. The Angels have been terrible.

But Reid Detmers gives Los Angeles enough of a starting-pitching argument that laying approximately -140 with Boston becomes less attractive.

Sometimes the right move is recognizing the angle and still refusing the price.

🏈 NFL EARLY MARKET WATCH

Tomorrow night, NFL football begins.

Our first early-number target remains:

Tennessee Titans vs. New York Jets

We originally liked Tennessee in the -2.5/-3 neighborhood, and the market subsequently gave us opportunities at -2 or better.

That is exactly the situation this section is designed for.

There is now some injury news to monitor. Tennessee linebacker Cedric Gray, who led the Titans with 164 tackles last season, is in concussion protocol after a weekend UTV accident. His Week 1 availability is uncertain. Meanwhile, Jets running back Breece Hall is expected to play after dealing with a groin injury.

That doesn't automatically kill Tennessee.

It means we do what disciplined bettors are supposed to do:

Track the number. Track the injury report. Don't blindly chase.

MARKET WATCH POSITION

Tennessee -2 or better remains attractive

-2.5: still playable territory
-3: reassess
Above -3: likely too late

Tax Code members who act early should never have to pay a worse number simply because they waited until Sunday morning.

📚 COLLEGE FOOTBALL BETTING GUIDE

Week 1 of the NFL is here, and college football is already giving us examples of why numbers matter.

Monday’s SMU game is the perfect example.

The newsletter went out at -3.

Later bettors found -2.5.

One number pushed.

The other won.

Half a point mattered.

That is exactly the kind of market awareness covered throughout The Square Tax College Football Betting Guide.
