THE SQUARE TAX
DAILY TAX REPORT — DAY SLATE
Wednesday, August 19, 2026
Two Official Plays. One strong team-total lean. No reason to force the rest.
Odds reference: Scores & Odds board captured at 10:25 a.m. ET, with the market checked again shortly before publication. Lines move, so always shop for the best available number.
Tightened-System Record: 7–6
Another split last night.
🟢 Yankees ML -106 — WIN
🔴 Braves ML -129 — LOSS
That moves the tightened process to 7–6.
The approach does not change. We want multiple reasons to make a wager, and we want the number to still make sense when it is time to bet.
There are five games on the afternoon slate, beginning with Detroit–Pittsburgh at 12:35 p.m. ET.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Pittsburgh Pirates Team Total Over 4.5 +105
This is my favorite team-total angle on the afternoon board.
Pittsburgh faces Jackson Jobe, who enters at 1–1 with a 6.23 ERA. The Pirates counter with Paul Skenes, but Skenes is not the reason for this particular wager — we're isolating Pittsburgh's offense against Jobe and the Detroit pitching staff.
The Pirates moneyline was already -154 on both our morning board and the late check. Rather than pay that price, the team total gives us a chance to attack the matchup at plus money. The side itself has not moved from the number we recorded this morning.
We need five Pittsburgh runs.
Official Play: Pirates Team Total Over 4.5 +105
Playable: I like the plus-money number. If the price has moved substantially into negative juice, do not chase it.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
San Diego Padres ML -136
This is the cleanest starting-pitching advantage on the afternoon slate.
San Diego sends Michael King to the mound at 8–8 with a 3.41 ERA and 124 strikeouts. The Mets counter with Robert Stock, who enters 0–2 with a 6.57 ERA.
The Padres were -136 on our morning board, and the price was still -136 when the market was checked again. That is important: the number has not run away from us.
We considered San Diego's team total Over 4.5, but the moneyline gives us more ways to win. If King pitches the way we expect and San Diego wins a lower-scoring game, we still cash.
Official Play: Padres ML -136
Playable to: -145
🟡 STRONG LEAN
Atlanta Braves Team Total Under 4.5 -125
This is the interesting one.
Atlanta is the better team overall at 74–52, but Minnesota has won the first two games of this series, and Atlanta's offense has produced just two runs and one run in those games. Minnesota starts Taj Bradley, who enters 9–5 with a 3.98 ERA and 151 strikeouts.
The Braves moneyline remains approximately -104, essentially unchanged from our morning board.
We initially considered Atlanta ML because of the near-pick'em price, but the recent offensive performance pushes us toward the team-total Under instead.
At Under 4.5 -125, though, we're paying enough juice that I am stopping just short of making it an Official Play.
Strong Lean: Braves Team Total Under 4.5 -125
If you find -115 or better, it becomes considerably more attractive.
🟡 LEAN
Chicago Cubs Team Total Over 4.5 +115
The plus-money price is attractive, but this is not an obvious pitching fade.
The Cubs are still -140 on the moneyline and the full-game total remains around 8. The market has barely moved from our morning snapshot.
Five Cubs runs at +115 is worth consideration, but it does not clear the Official Play threshold.
Lean: Cubs Team Total Over 4.5 +115
🔴 PASS
Arizona Diamondbacks at Boston Red Sox
This is one of the better pitching matchups on the afternoon slate.
The market still has Boston around -158, Arizona approximately +147, with the total at 8. Those prices are essentially the same as our morning snapshot.
The Under is interesting, but not enough to force another wager after we've already identified two cleaner plays.
Pass.
🔴 PASS
Atlanta Braves ML -104
Atlanta is a first-place club being offered at essentially even money, so the price deserves attention.
But AJ Smith-Shawver is making another start after returning from Tommy John surgery and comes in with limited major-league work this season, while Bradley gives Minnesota a legitimate starter on the other side.
More importantly, Atlanta has already scored only three combined runs in the first two games of this series.
We are not betting them simply because they are the better team and lost yesterday.
Pass on the Braves ML.
DAY-SLATE CARD
🟢 Pirates TT Over 4.5 +105
🟢 Padres ML -136
🟡 Strong Lean: Braves TT Under 4.5 -125
🟡 Lean: Cubs TT Over 4.5 +115
Everything else: Pass.
WHY THE TEAM TOTAL MATTERS
Atlanta is a good example of why we don't stop at the moneyline.
The Braves are the better overall team, and -104 looks attractive on the surface.
But if the biggest concern is an offense that has scored only three runs through the first two games of the series, asking Atlanta to win is not necessarily the cleanest way to express the handicap.
That led us to examine:
Braves Team Total Under 4.5 -125
The side and the team total tell two completely different stories.
Finding the right game is only part of the job.
Finding the right way to bet the game matters too.
BANKROLL REMINDER
We are 7–6 under the tightened process.
Two Official Plays made the afternoon card.
That is enough.
Do not turn Strong Leans into Official Plays because you want more action, and do not chase a team-total price if the number has moved significantly from what we published.
Every day somebody pays the Square Tax. Don't let it be you.
