The Square Tax — Daily Tax Report

Early Edition: Backing Form, Fading Weakness

Odds checked at 11:35 a.m. ET on Thursday, August 6. Lines can move after publication. Always shop for the best available number.

Yesterday finished 1-2.

The Cubs cashed, while Andrew Painter’s strikeout prop fell one short after he exited following four innings with four strikeouts and only one earned run allowed. That is baseball: the handicap can be on track, but injury, workload, or an unexpected early exit can still decide the ticket.

Philadelphia’s team total also finished short at four runs.

No excuses. No chasing. Today’s board starts fresh.

🟢 Official Play No. 1

Chicago Cubs Moneyline +104

Chicago enters today playing some of its best baseball of the season, and we are still getting plus money rather than paying a premium to ride the streak.

Dylan Cease gives the Cubs the starting-pitching advantage, while Chicago’s offense has been producing consistently during its current run. We always check whether the market has already adjusted to a winning streak, but the fact that the Cubs remain a small underdog tells us the price has not become unreasonable.

This is not simply a bet on momentum. It is a bet on current form, the starting-pitching matchup, and a playable number.

🟢 Official Play No. 2

Ryan Johnson Over 3.5 Earned Runs +105

Baltimore has the offensive ability to pressure Johnson early, and his recent profile makes four earned runs a reachable target.

We considered the Orioles team total, but without a confirmed favorable price, this prop gives us a direct way to attack the matchup at plus money. We do not need Baltimore’s bullpen, defense, or final result to cooperate. We only need Johnson to surrender four earned runs before his day ends.

The obvious risk is an early hook with inherited runners stranded by the bullpen. That is part of betting pitcher earned-run props. At +105, the price compensates us for that uncertainty.

🟡 Lean

Mets–Guardians Under 7.5 (-118)

Both starting pitchers give this game the foundation for a lower-scoring start, and the market is already reflecting that with a total of 7.5.

We prefer the under, but we do not love laying -118 with such little margin for bullpen trouble. Seven runs wins; eight loses. One poor relief inning can erase six strong innings from the starters.

This is our preferred direction, but it is not an official play and does not count on the ledger.

🔴 Pass

David Peterson Over 1.5 Earned Runs (-170)

The threshold dropped from 2.5 to 1.5, but the price became unacceptable.

We are not risking 1.70 units to win one on a pitcher prop. Liking the matchup does not mean accepting any number the sportsbook offers.

Tax Tip of the Day

A lower betting threshold is not automatically a better bet.

Peterson only needs to allow two earned runs, but the -170 price removes the value. Always evaluate the number and the payout together—not just how likely the bet appears to win.

Bankroll Reminder

Every official play is 1 unit.

Do not increase your wager because yesterday lost.
Do not double your wager because today’s card looks strong.
No chasing. No parlays disguised as discipline.
