THE SQUARE TAX

DAILY TAX REPORT — EARLY EDITION

Thursday, August 20, 2026

Three afternoon games remain on the board. One made the Official Play cut at the updated number.

Odds reference: Morning Scores & Odds board with updated prices checked again at approximately 1:20 p.m. ET.

Tightened-System Record: 9–8

Yesterday finished 2–2 overall.

Day slate: 0–2
🔴 Pirates Team Total Over 4.5 — LOSS
🔴 Padres ML -136 — LOSS

Evening slate: 2–0
🟢 Yankees ML — WIN
🟢 Reds ML — WIN

The evening sweep erased the afternoon damage and moved the cleaned-up process from 7–8 to 9–8.

Several of today's early games had already started before we could publish, so they are off the board completely. We are grading only the three remaining afternoon matchups.

🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY

Seattle Mariners ML +131

This is the best value among the remaining games.

Seattle was approximately +119 on our earlier board. The updated market has moved to:

Seattle +131
Milwaukee -141

That movement deserves respect, but it also gives us a substantially better price on the side we preferred.

The pitching matchup is the primary reason.

Seattle sends George Kirby, who brings the stronger starting-pitching profile into this matchup against Milwaukee's Robert Gasser. Kirby has been the more reliable major-league starter, and at +131 we no longer need Seattle to win this game often to make the wager worthwhile.

Milwaukee is unquestionably the stronger overall club, which is why Seattle is the underdog. But we're not being asked to lay a price with the Mariners.

We're getting better than +130 with the starting pitcher we prefer.

Seattle also bounced back from the 22–0 loss earlier in the series by winning 7–5, an important reminder that one ugly result does not automatically carry into the next game.

The total has now reached 8, Under -117, another indication that the market expects a relatively competitive pitching environment.

Official Play: Seattle Mariners ML +131

Playable to: +120

If Seattle drops substantially below +120, the value becomes much thinner.

🟡 STRONG LEAN

Kansas City Royals ML -129

Kansas City actually became more attractive as the day progressed.

Earlier:

Royals -136

Updated:

Royals -129
Oakland +120

The full-game total is 8, Over -115.

Kansas City gets the starting-pitching advantage we prefer, and the improved moneyline price certainly helps.

The reason this remains below Official status is the overall quality of the Royals themselves. Kansas City has not been consistent enough for us to elevate the play solely because we prefer the pitching matchup.

At -129, however, this is considerably better than laying -140 or higher.

Strong Lean: Kansas City ML -129

🟡 LEAN

Atlanta Braves ML -103

Updated market:

Atlanta -103
White Sox -104

Total: 8.5, Over -117

This is essentially a true pick'em.

Atlanta remains the better overall baseball team, and getting them around even money immediately deserves consideration.

But the Braves have not been playing particularly sharp baseball lately, and the pitching matchup does not create enough separation to make this an automatic Official Play.

The White Sox have been competitive enough that we cannot treat this as a simple case of "better team at a cheap price."

Atlanta absolutely can win this game, and -103 is attractive.

It simply does not grade as highly as Seattle at +131.

Lean: Atlanta ML -103

AFTERNOON CARD

🟢 Seattle Mariners ML +131

🟡 Strong Lean: Kansas City Royals ML -129
🟡 Lean: Atlanta Braves ML -103

MARKET WATCH

Seattle gives us another useful example of why we record an early board.

Our first number was roughly:

Seattle +119

The updated price:

Seattle +131

The market moved against Seattle, but our handicap did not change enough to abandon the side.

Instead, we're now receiving an additional 12 cents of underdog value.

That does not automatically mean every move against us should be ignored. Sometimes movement is telling us something important.

But when we've checked the matchup and still believe the original handicap holds, a better price can create a better wager.

The important question is never simply:

Who do we think wins?

It is:

Is the available number worth betting?

BANKROLL REMINDER

The tightened process stands at 9–8.

Today we have one Official Play in the early edition.

Seattle Mariners ML +131

Kansas City and Atlanta remain below the Official threshold.

We'll return later with the NFL preseason slate, remaining MLB games and WNBA board for tonight's edition.

Every day somebody pays the Square Tax. Don't let it be you.
