Football First. Market Watch Active. Week 0 Is Here.

Thursday Recap

Thursday finished 1-1.

Milwaukee delivered behind another strong pitching performance. The Chargers did not get there.

That moves the weekly Official Play record to 3-7.

The preseason portion of the card has been the weakest segment so far, but that does not mean every remaining preseason game becomes an automatic pass. If the quarterback rotation, starter intent, depth and market all line up, the game still deserves consideration.

The difference now is that we will not force one simply because football is on the board.

🏈 NFL PRESEASON

Washington Commanders @ Baltimore Ravens

6:00 p.m. ET

Baltimore will sit Lamar Jackson after using the joint practice as his final meaningful preseason work. Washington is also treating this game primarily as a roster-evaluation opportunity, with Athan Kaliakmanis and Sam Hartman expected to handle quarterback duties.

The Ravens are laying roughly 2.5 to 3.5 depending on the book, but there is not enough quarterback or starter separation to justify laying the number.

Classification: 🔴 PASS

Houston Texans @ Carolina Panthers

7:00 p.m. ET

Both clubs are sitting their starting units.

Houston will lean on Davis Mills and Brett Rypien, while Carolina turns to Kenny Pickett and Kyle Trask with Bryce Young sitting.

That creates a backup-versus-backup game with very little meaningful separation at a short spread.

Classification: 🔴 PASS

🟡 STRONG LEAN — ATLANTA FALCONS -3.5

7:00 p.m. ET

This is one of the better preseason spots on tonight’s board.

Atlanta is expected to give Tua Tagovailoa the start against his former team while mixing in portions of the first unit. Michael Penix Jr. will sit, with Cooper Rush and Jack Strand available behind Tua. Miami has not committed publicly to a full starter workload.

The advantage is not simply Tua playing. It is Atlanta entering the game with a defined plan while Miami’s participation remains less certain.

At roughly -3.5, Atlanta gets consideration.

Classification: 🟡 STRONG LEAN — Falcons -3.5

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Jacksonville Jaguars

7:30 p.m. ET

Both clubs are expected to sit their established starters after using joint practices for their meaningful work.

That leaves a game dominated by roster battles and deep reserves.

Tampa Bay is laying roughly 2.5, but there is not enough edge to justify it.

Classification: 🔴 PASS

New York Giants @ New York Jets

7:30 p.m. ET

This is one of the more difficult preseason games to handicap because both coaching staffs have left important decisions unresolved.

Jaxson Dart’s availability remains uncertain, while the Jets have also declined to fully commit to how much work their starters will receive.

When the quarterback and starter plans remain unclear this late, there is no reason to guess.

Classification: 🔴 PASS

🟡 STRONG LEAN — PHILADELPHIA EAGLES -2.5

8:00 p.m. ET

Cincinnati will sit Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and the majority of its established starters.

Philadelphia has not announced a full first-unit plan, but the Eagles have framed the finale as another meaningful evaluation opportunity before final cuts.

At a short number, the combination of Cincinnati clearly shutting things down and Philadelphia still evaluating the bottom of its roster gives the Eagles the better side.

Classification: 🟡 STRONG LEAN — Eagles -2.5

🟡 STRONG LEAN — DALLAS COWBOYS -2.5

8:00 p.m. ET

New Orleans plans to sit most of its starters after accumulating significant work during joint practices.

Dallas still has an unresolved backup quarterback battle between Joe Milton III and Sam Howell, meaning both quarterbacks have legitimate incentive to perform.

That motivation and quarterback competition are meaningful in a preseason finale.

Classification: 🟡 STRONG LEAN — Cowboys -2.5

Arizona Cardinals @ Green Bay Packers

8:00 p.m. ET

Green Bay will sit most of its starters.

Arizona quarterback Carson Beck remains uncertain because of rib discomfort, and Arizona has not provided enough clarity on the rest of the rotation.

With uncertainty on Arizona and backups carrying most of Green Bay’s workload, the number provides no useful edge.

Classification: 🔴 PASS

🟡 LEAN — KANSAS CITY CHIEFS -1.5

8:00 p.m. ET

Seattle is expected to sit its regular starters again.

Patrick Mahomes will also sit for Kansas City, but Garrett Nussmeier is expected to start, and Kansas City could give some additional offensive regulars brief work.

At only -1.5, Kansas City has the slightly better setup.

It is not enough for an Official Play, but the Chiefs are the preferred side.

Classification: 🟡 LEAN — Chiefs -1.5

Minnesota Vikings @ Denver Broncos

9:00 p.m. ET

Minnesota will sit its starters, and Denver is expected to sit Bo Nix.

The Vikings also have uncertainty behind the starting quarterback spot with J.J. McCarthy working through an ankle issue.

Denver laying 3.5 in a reserve-heavy preseason game is more than we want to give away.

Classification: 🔴 PASS

🏈 COLLEGE FOOTBALL — EARLY ACTION FOR SATURDAY

This is where the new Market Watch approach starts paying dividends.

When a number looks wrong early in the week and we believe the market will move against us, waiting until game day defeats the purpose.

🟢 OFFICIAL EARLY PLAY — TCU -9 / -9.5

Play to -10

TCU was available at -7.5 earlier in the week and has now climbed toward -9.5.

That move is exactly why early betting matters.

TCU beat North Carolina 48-14 last season, and the Horned Frogs again enter with the better offensive outlook. North Carolina also enters the opener without defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, adding another element of instability to a unit preparing for a difficult matchup.

The current number is not as attractive as -7.5, but we still believe TCU owns a meaningful matchup advantage.

Released number: TCU -9 / -9.5
Play to: -10
Current Market Watch: UP

Once the number moves above 10, the wager becomes materially less attractive even if we still expect TCU to win comfortably.

Classification: 🟢 OFFICIAL EARLY PLAY — TCU -9 / -9.5

🟡 STRONG LEAN — SAN JOSÉ STATE/USC OVER 61.5

USC enters with one of the most dangerous offenses in the country and returns quarterback Jayden Maiava.

San José State is coming off a poor season but continues to run an aggressive spread system and now turns to Hawaii transfer Luke Weaver at quarterback. USC has averaged more than 40 points per home game over its recent sample, while San José State road games have routinely produced enough scoring opportunities to keep this total within reach.

The concern is that USC could dominate so thoroughly that San José State fails to contribute enough.

At 61.5, however, this remains worth consideration.

Classification: 🟡 STRONG LEAN — Over 61.5

🟡 STRONG LEAN — SAN JOSÉ STATE TEAM TOTAL OVER 10.5 (+105)

DraftKings

This is the derivative we prefer from the same matchup.

San José State only needs 11 points to cash.

That gives us several paths: two touchdowns, a touchdown plus multiple field goals, or three scoring drives and a late field goal.

USC should control the game, but the Trojans have surrendered enough points at home historically that asking San José State to reach 11 is not unreasonable.

The price matters here too.

Over 10.5 +105 is substantially better than sacrificing the key 11-point landing spot merely to gain a few cents of juice.

Classification: 🟡 STRONG LEAN — SJSU Team Total Over 10.5 (+105)

⚾ MLB

🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY — NEW YORK YANKEES ML

Approximately -145 to -155

This is exactly the kind of starter-driven game we want to attack.

Cam Schlittler enters with an 11-6 record, 2.16 ERA, 2.61 FIP and 24.9% strikeout-minus-walk rate.

Boston counters with Patrick Sandoval, whose ERA sits at 4.54 with materially weaker underlying numbers.

Boston is playing good baseball, so this is not a fade of the Red Sox.

It is a bet on a dominant starting pitcher at home at a manageable number.

This fits the baseball approach perfectly.

Classification: 🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY — Yankees ML

🟡 STRONG LEAN — ATLANTA BRAVES ML

Atlanta hosts Colorado with Grant Holmes facing Tomoyuki Sugano.

Holmes carries a 3.64 ERA compared with Sugano’s 4.96, while Atlanta is 79-55 and Colorado sits 52-82.

The problem is price.

At roughly -215 to -225, Atlanta should win, but unlike an elite ace spot, Holmes does not provide quite enough dominance to force this into Official status.

Classification: 🟡 STRONG LEAN — Braves ML

🟡 STRONG LEAN — MILWAUKEE BREWERS ML

Milwaukee returns home at 82-51 against a Texas club below .500.

Logan Henderson faces Cody Bradford, while Milwaukee owns one of baseball’s best pitching staffs and remains in contention for the best overall record.

This is not Misiorowski tonight, which matters.

At approximately -195 to -210, we like Milwaukee but do not need to make every Brewers game an Official Play simply because the club is excellent.

Classification: 🟡 STRONG LEAN — Brewers ML

Remaining MLB Board

The rest of tonight’s MLB slate does not provide enough combination of dominant pitching, current streak strength or matchup separation to justify loading the card.

🏀 WNBA

🟡 STRONG LEAN — LAS VEGAS ACES -13.5

Toronto continues to operate with an injury-depleted roster and has only one win in its last 15 games.

Las Vegas has already beaten Toronto twice this season by double digits. Toronto is without multiple leading scorers, including Marina Mabrey, Brittney Sykes and Nyara Sabally.

The concern is the size of the spread and Las Vegas losing NaLyssa Smith for the remainder of the season.

Still, Toronto’s current roster situation is difficult to ignore.

Classification: 🟡 STRONG LEAN — Aces -13.5

Connecticut Sun @ Indiana Fever

Indiana is clearly the better team and has dominated the recent series, but laying roughly 17 points is enormous.

There is no need to force a favorite through that kind of number.

Classification: 🔴 PASS

Portland Fire @ Atlanta Dream

Atlanta is the better club, but laying approximately 12.5 against a Portland team capable of producing occasional offensive explosions is uncomfortable.

Classification: 🔴 PASS

Washington Mystics @ Los Angeles Sparks

Washington is playing strong basketball, but the Mystics are completing a West Coast road swing and playing on consecutive nights.

The matchup favors Washington. The scheduling spot does not.

📈 MARKET WATCH

TCU

Earlier this week: -7.5
Current: -9 to -9.5
Play to: -10
Direction: ⬆️

The market has already moved significantly toward TCU.

Readers who acted earlier captured the superior number.

That is exactly why football betting cannot always wait until Saturday morning.

When the market gives you a number you believe is wrong, sometimes the best decision is simply to act before everybody else catches up.

Week 0 begins tomorrow.

If you are going to bet college football, the goal should not be to have action on every televised game.

It should be to recognize where the market is giving you an opportunity — and where it is asking you to pay too much.

From the College Football Betting Guide

Most bettors do not lose because they know nothing about football. They lose because they bet too many games, pay bad prices, chase losses, trust rankings too much and confuse picking the winner with making a good wager.

That is exactly what this week’s TCU movement illustrates.

TCU at -7.5 and TCU at -10.5 may represent the same football opinion.

They are not the same wager.
