THE SQUARE TAX
DAILY TAX REPORT — SATURDAY EARLY EDITION
August 29, 2026
Weekly Record: 4-7
Friday finally gave us one of those pitching-driven games in our favor. The Yankees scored only once, but a 1-0 win was enough to cash the Official Play.
That was particularly welcome after four losses this week in which our offenses supplied virtually no run support. The losses count the same either way. The answer is not to chase them; it is to keep grading the process and wait for the opportunities we actually want.
And today, college football finally gives us several.
🏈 COLLEGE FOOTBALL — OFFICIAL PLAYS
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: TCU -8.5 OR BETTER vs. North Carolina
TCU was our first Week 0 position, and nothing about Saturday morning has changed our side.
The market opened around TCU -6.5, climbed as high as the -9/-9.5 range, and has now pulled back into the -7.5/-8.5 neighborhood at several books.
The retracement deserves attention, but the larger move remains heavily toward TCU from the opener. Current market data continues to show respected money supporting the Horned Frogs, while North Carolina will also be without defensive coordinator Steve Belichick for the opener.
TCU owns the more established offensive identity and enters this matchup with considerably fewer questions than a North Carolina program still building around a new staff and roster.
Current recommendation: Take the best TCU number available. Anything -8.5 or better is fully playable.
Classification: 🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
MARKET WATCH — TCU
Opening market: approximately TCU -6.5
Earlier-week Square Tax checkpoint: TCU -7.5
Friday market: roughly -9 to -9.5
Saturday morning: roughly -7.5 to -8.5 at much of the board
The overnight buyback is noteworthy, but it does not erase the substantial move from the opener. The market has already validated the original idea that TCU was short at the earliest number.
We will continue tracking it until kickoff.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: SAN JOSÉ STATE TEAM TOTAL OVER 10.5 +105
This number survived the night.
That matters.
San José State does not need to threaten USC outright. We are simply asking the Spartans to reach 11 points in a game where we expect pace, passing volume and plenty of possessions.
San José State has become a much more aggressive passing offense than many bettors might assume from Ken Niumatalolo's background, while USC should provide enough offensive pressure to force the Spartans to continue throwing rather than shortening the game.
Two touchdowns gets us there.
At Over 10.5 +105, the price remains attractive.
Classification: 🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: SAN JOSÉ STATE–USC OVER 61.5
We liked this before seeing outside agreement, and the matchup continues to support it.
USC should be capable of doing a substantial portion of the scoring. Lincoln Riley's teams are built to create points and tempo, while San José State's passing-oriented offense gives us a better chance of getting contribution from the underdog than the enormous spread might suggest.
The current market remains around 61.5, with USC laying approximately 38.5.
This does not require San José State to stay competitive for four quarters. It requires enough possessions and enough contribution to complement what should be a productive USC offense.
Play: Over 61.5
60.5 is obviously even better if available.
Classification: 🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: NC STATE +4.5 at Virginia
This is exactly the kind of market signal we want to identify.
Virginia was approximately -5.5 earlier in the week. Saturday morning the board is predominantly Virginia -4/-4.5.
The important part is not simply that the line moved.
The important part is how it moved.
Current betting information shows Virginia receiving a majority of public spread tickets while the line has moved toward NC State. At a sharper market, NC State is attracting a disproportionately large share of the money. That is classic reverse-line-movement behavior and strongly suggests respected support for the Wolfpack.
And the football case exists independently of the market.
NC State returns quarterback CJ Bailey, while Virginia is introducing a new quarterback and replacing meaningful skill-position production. In an opener where neither offense should be expected to operate flawlessly, getting more than a field goal with the more established quarterback has value.
We leaned NC State before this move.
The market strengthened the handicap rather than creating it.
Play: NC State +4.5
Prefer +4.5. +4 remains playable.
Classification: 🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
EARLY COLLEGE BOARD — WATCH LIST
Two games remain under consideration for tonight's edition.
Florida State–New Mexico State Over 53.5 is gaining our attention. Florida State has the ability to carry a large portion of the number itself, while New Mexico State may be capable of contributing enough to get the game home.
Stanford -3.5/-4 vs. Hawaii is also firmly on the board. One independent power-rating estimate made Stanford approximately a six-point favorite, and the market itself has moved from Stanford -3 toward -4. Respected-money indicators also favor Stanford, while the total has been pushed downward despite public Over support.
Both get another line check before tonight's Tax Report.
🏈 NFL PRESEASON
Detroit Lions at Indianapolis Colts — 1:00 p.m. ET
Market: Indianapolis approximately -3.5
Total: approximately 35.5
There is a legitimate rotation advantage for Indianapolis.
Detroit is expected to sit its established starters and use this game primarily as a final roster evaluation. Indianapolis is taking a different approach: Anthony Richardson is expected to play the first quarter, with the Colts giving a larger portion of their first-team personnel some work before transitioning to Riley Leonard and Easton Stick.
That creates an obvious early-game advantage for Indianapolis.
The reason this stops short of an Official Play is familiar: after that opening stretch, this becomes another preseason depth-chart game, and laying 3.5 requires Indianapolis' backups to maintain whatever advantage the starters create.
🟡 STRONG LEAN: Indianapolis -3.5
Not enough for an Official Play, but the Colts are clearly our preferred side.
The final preseason game, Chicago–Tennessee, will be handled in tonight's edition.
⚾ MLB — EARLY BOARD
Football takes priority today, so baseball gets a tighter filter.
Dodgers at Tigers — 1:10 p.m.
Blake Snell has been excellent since returning, allowing only two runs over his first three starts back while working six innings each time. Detroit counters with Keider Montero, who has also pitched well, so this is not a free square despite Los Angeles' overall advantage.
At roughly -175 to -190, we prefer Los Angeles but are not forcing the price.
🟡 STRONG LEAN: Dodgers ML
Rockies at Braves — 4:10 p.m.
Atlanta triggers our hot-team filter after winning five straight. The matchup strengthens the case: Martín Pérez carries a 3.12 ERA into a meeting with Ryan Feltner, who enters with a 6.08 ERA, while Atlanta is roughly a -200 favorite.
We are not automatically turning every heavy favorite into an Official Play, particularly on a football-heavy Saturday.
But this absolutely qualifies under the system.
🟡 STRONG LEAN: Atlanta Braves ML
Royals at Guardians — 4:10 p.m.
Cleveland's seven-game winning streak ended Friday when Kansas City shut the Guardians out 3-0. Kansas City itself has been extremely hot, entering this series 9-1 over its previous ten.
That gives us competing streak signals, and Cleveland has the starting-pitching advantage Saturday.
🔴 PASS
Red Sox at Yankees — 1:05 p.m.
After Friday night's 1-0 Yankees win, Saturday begins with the first half of a doubleheader. Boston has Jake Bennett going, while New York's starter was still unconfirmed in the latest official listing.
No reason to guess.
🔴 PASS
White Sox at Twins — 2:10 p.m.
Chicago has won three straight, but neither Erick Fedde nor Bailey Ober provides enough of an edge to make the current price attractive.
🔴 PASS
Pirates at Cardinals — 2:15 p.m.
St. Louis has struggled recently, and the near-pick'em price does not give us a compelling reason to step in.
🔴 PASS
Reds at Cubs — 2:20 p.m.
Chicago is a significant favorite, but Andrew Abbott versus Kevin Gausman does not justify laying this price given the Cubs' recent inconsistency.
🔴 PASS
Mariners at Blue Jays — 3:07 p.m.
Near pick'em territory and no meaningful mismatch.
🔴 PASS
Diamondbacks at Giants — 4:05 p.m.
Another tightly priced matchup without enough separation.
🔴 PASS
Marlins at Nationals — 4:05 p.m.
Sandy Alcantara versus Cade Cavalli gives both teams legitimate starting pitching. The price reflects the uncertainty.
🔴 PASS
🏀 WNBA
Chicago Sky at New York Liberty — 1:00 p.m.
Market: Liberty approximately -8.5
Chicago is missing important personnel, but New York has not been consistent enough to comfortably lay this number. The first two meetings were decided by only one point apiece, and New York is also without Satou Sabally.
There are better places for today's bankroll.
🔴 PASS
Toronto–Phoenix at 10:00 p.m. will be evaluated for tonight's report after another injury and market check.
