THE SQUARE TAX
DAILY TAX REPORT

Official Record: 12–16
The last two cards have gone 1–6. That is the reality, and there is no reason to hide from it.
But today’s card is not about chasing losses. We went back through the board again — starting pitching, underlying numbers, bullpen quality, recent form, market movement, injuries, lineup context and outside market intelligence — before deciding which bets actually deserved Official status.
Football comes first.
🏈 NFL PRESEASON
Seattle Seahawks at Tennessee Titans
Full game: Tennessee -4.5 | Total 37.5 | Titans ML -198
First half: Tennessee -2.5 (-115)
The market has made a substantial statement here. Tennessee opened only -1.5 and is now laying 4.5.
There is also a concrete football reason behind that move.
Titans coach Robert Saleh says Tennessee’s starters are expected to play roughly 20–25 snaps and potentially all the way to halftime. The Titans themselves confirmed that plan Saturday. VSiN’s quarterback-rotation work also expects significantly more Cam Ward and Tennessee starter exposure than Seattle is likely to give its established players.
That immediately makes the first half the most attractive way to express the handicap.
Instead of laying -4.5 for sixty minutes and exposing ourselves to late preseason roster chaos, we can lay less than a field goal during the portion of the game where Tennessee should possess its largest personnel advantage.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Tennessee Titans 1H -2.5 (-115)
Playable to: -2.5 around -125.
If the market gets to -3 or worse, reassess rather than chase.
The full-game Titans -4.5 remains a Strong Lean, but the first-half bet is superior.
⚾ MLB
St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies — 1:35 ET
Phillies -216 | Run Line -1.5 (-106) | Total 8
Cristopher Sánchez gives Philadelphia the best clear pitching advantage on the early board. He enters with a 2.51 ERA, 2.61 FIP and a 27.8% strikeout rate. Kyle Leahy’s 3.24 ERA looks respectable, but his expected ERA is considerably worse and he has allowed much harder contact than the surface number suggests.
Philadelphia has also won eight straight entering today and is trying to complete the sweep.
The problem with the moneyline is obvious: -216 is too expensive.
The run line solves that problem. Your board gives us Philadelphia -1.5 at essentially even money, and both ticket and handle data are heavily aligned with Philadelphia.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Phillies -1.5 (-106)
We are asking the stronger lineup with the superior starter to win by two rather than laying more than two dollars on the moneyline.
Washington Nationals at Miami Marlins — 1:40 ET
Miami -154 | Total 8
This is the best total on the board for me.
Washington rookie Jackson Kent has made two major-league starts and allowed eight runs in 7⅔ innings while issuing eight walks. His ERA sits at 9.39, and his WHIP is an enormous 2.48. Miami starter Janson Junk is steadier, but he is also a contact pitcher with a 4.37 ERA.
Then we get to the bullpens.
Washington ranks near the bottom of MLB in relief ERA, while Miami has also been one of baseball’s worst relief units since July 1. VSiN makes this total approximately 8.8 runs.
The market information backs the handicap: only 55% of total bets were on the Over at DraftKings, but 95% of the money was there.
And getting 8 rather than 8.5 matters.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Nationals/Marlins Over 8 (-118)
Four-four gets our money back.
Tampa Bay Rays at Baltimore Orioles
Baltimore -112 | Total 8.5
Nick Martinez has struggled recently despite the attractive season ERA. Shane Baz has pitched better than his surface record suggests, and VSiN actually makes Baltimore the favorite.
There are arguments for Baltimore and the Over, but the signals are mixed enough that neither gets through the Official filter.
Classification: LEAN ORIOLES / PASS ON THE TOTAL
Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees
Yankees -129 | Toronto +120 | Total 8
Toronto is interesting.
DraftKings showed only 33% of tickets on Toronto but 71% of the money, one of the clearest ticket-versus-handle discrepancies on the early slate.
That is enough to get our attention, especially at +120, but not enough on its own to make Toronto an Official Play.
Classification: LEAN BLUE JAYS +120
Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals
Detroit -105 | Total 8.5
The side is close to a coin flip, but the more interesting market is the total.
Only 35% of bets were on Over 8.5 while 94% of the money landed there.
That is significant, but with both starters carrying strong surface numbers, I don’t want to promote a betting split alone into an Official.
Classification: STRONG LEAN OVER 8.5
Athletics at Houston Astros
Houston -171 | Total 9
Cristian Javier has a 6.44 ERA and has allowed 1.73 homers per nine innings. That makes Houston uncomfortable at this price, regardless of opponent.
Classification: PASS
New York Mets at Chicago White Sox
Near pick’em | Total 8
This is one of the strangest market splits on the board.
Only 16% of run-line tickets were on the Mets -1.5, but those bets represented 89% of the money. At the same time, White Sox moneyline handle has been strong.
When two markets are telling us different stories, we don’t need to guess.
Classification: PASS
Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers
Texas -154 | Total 8
Texas has a meaningful starting-pitching edge with Cal Quantrill against Yusei Kikuchi. The Rangers are also drawing overwhelming handle support.
I like Texas. I don't love paying -154.
Classification: STRONG LEAN RANGERS ML
Cleveland Guardians at Colorado Rockies
Cleveland -163 | Total 11.5
Both starters have serious home-run vulnerability, and now we put them at Coors.
Only 26% of total tickets were on the Over, while 77% of the money was backing it.
The problem is the number: 11.5 is enormous.
Classification: LEAN OVER 11.5
San Francisco Giants at Boston Red Sox
Boston -204 | Total 8.5
Boston is the better team and has the experience advantage against an inexperienced opposing starter.
But -204 is not a price we need to pay.
Classification: PASS
Pittsburgh Pirates at Los Angeles Dodgers
Dodgers -271 | Total 8.5
No interest laying -271.
The total is more interesting because Pittsburgh starter Lake Bachar has surrendered home runs at a very high rate, and 98% of total handle at DraftKings was on the Over.
Classification: LEAN OVER 8.5
Minnesota Twins at San Diego Padres
Padres -136 | Total 9
This is the baseball side that improved the most on my second examination.
Walker Buehler has allowed three earned runs or fewer in six consecutive starts, while Bailey Ober has a 4.62 ERA and has allowed nearly 1.5 home runs per nine. San Diego’s offense has also improved significantly since the All-Star break. VSiN makes the Padres approximately -161, meaning our -136 still offers room relative to that handicap.
The market agrees. San Diego was receiving 97% of moneyline handle, and its run line was drawing 92% of the money despite less than half the tickets.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Padres ML -136
This replaces Cubs/Seattle as the baseball spot I trust more after the second pass.
Chicago Cubs at Seattle Mariners
Cubs -113 | Total 7.5
This is exactly why we recheck the board.
There is strong market money on Chicago, but VSiN’s underlying handicap actually makes Seattle -152, largely because Bryce Miller has been dramatically better at home while Shota Imanaga’s home-run and FIP numbers point toward regression.
That directly conflicts with the Cubs market support.
Instead of pretending that disagreement doesn't exist, we use it.
Classification: PASS
Cincinnati Reds at Arizona Diamondbacks
Arizona -129 | Total 9
VSiN makes Arizona approximately -141 and also projects the total above nine.
There is an edge, but not enough separation for Official.
Classification: LEAN DIAMONDBACKS -129
Atlanta Braves vs. Milwaukee Brewers — Williamsport
Milwaukee -123 | Total 7.5
Tyler Mahle has been excellent since joining Atlanta, but his road numbers this season have been dramatically worse. Milwaukee starter Shane Drohan has allowed three or more runs in six of his previous seven starts. Both offenses rank among MLB’s stronger run-producing clubs.
VSiN makes the total 8.1, and 80% of the money was showing on the Over.
Classification: STRONG LEAN OVER 7.5
🏀 WNBA
Seattle Storm at Dallas Wings — 4:00 ET
Dallas -8.5 | Total 174.5
Dallas moved from -6.5 to -8.5, but we have now missed two points of the move.
The Wings are much better at home and Seattle has been terrible on the road. However, VSiN’s projection only makes Dallas about -3.5, considerably below the current market. Dallas is also without Azzi Fudd for the season.
Classification: PASS
The direction may have been right at -6.5. At -8.5, we are buying after the move.
Indiana Fever at Chicago Sky — 7:00 ET
Indiana -3.5 | Total 186.5
The market has moved Indiana from -5.5 to -3.5.
Indiana is also on the second half of a back-to-back after Saturday’s difficult game against New York. Chicago has played significantly better at home. VSiN’s raw model still rates Indiana considerably higher, but even its analyst declined to bet the game because of the conflicting situational factors.
Classification: PASS
Las Vegas Aces at Toronto Tempo
Las Vegas -14.5 | Total 180.5
The move from Aces -11.5 to -14.5 is completely understandable.
Toronto will be without Marina Mabrey, Brittney Sykes, Aneesah Morrow, Maria Conde and Nyara Sabally. That is a massive chunk of its rotation.
But the market has already charged us three additional points.
VSiN’s injury-adjusted projection lands around Aces -13.5, which means -14.5 is no bargain.
Classification: PASS
Washington Mystics at Portland Fire
Washington -5.5 | Total 166.5
This is the WNBA game I find most interesting.
Washington opened -3.5 and has been steamed to -5.5. But Portland has played considerably better at home, Washington’s road offense has been much less reliable, and VSiN projects the Mystics closer to -2. Their analyst is specifically backing Portland +5.5 and would play it down to +4.5.
We are not copying that recommendation — but the underlying information supports taking the points rather than following Washington after the move.
Classification: STRONG LEAN PORTLAND FIRE +5.5
Not quite Official for me, but it is the WNBA number I’d watch most closely.
