THE SQUARE TAX
DAILY TAX REPORT — SUNDAY, AUGUST 30, 2026
Weekly Record: 6-10 entering Sunday
We enter Sunday at 6-10 for the week. There were a few games where the handicap gave us exactly the pitching or matchup we wanted and the offense simply never arrived. That’s betting sometimes. Good reads don’t always produce winning tickets, and losing tickets still count. We turn the page, keep the process tight, and finish the week strong.
The good news: NFL preseason is over, and the regular-season football board is finally here.
Today is almost entirely an early slate, so this is the complete Sunday card.
⚾ MLB
Miami Marlins at Washington Nationals — 12:15 p.m. ET
Miami sends Janson Junk against Andrew Alvarez. Washington has won three straight, but neither the pitching matchup nor the price gives us enough separation to force the first game simply because it starts early.
🔴 PASS
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: Atlanta Braves ML vs. Colorado Rockies — 1:35 p.m. ET
This is our cleanest Sunday baseball setup.
Atlanta has won six straight and goes for the sweep at home against a Colorado team sitting near the bottom of baseball. The Braves have repeatedly found ways to win during this run even when the offense has not exploded.
Tyler Mahle gets Colorado rookie Mason Adams, who is making only his second major-league appearance. Atlanta is expensive around the -220 range, but this is exactly where our approach says not to throw away the better team simply because the moneyline is heavy.
Hot team. Cold opponent. Sunday at home.
Play: Atlanta Braves ML
Classification: 🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees — 1:35 p.m.
Boston has Ranger Suárez against Will Warren. The Yankees and Red Sox split Saturday’s doubleheader after New York won the opener of the series 1-0 Friday. The rivalry is tight, and Boston has the starting-pitching edge on paper today.
No need to chase Friday’s Yankees winner.
🔴 PASS
Seattle Mariners at Toronto Blue Jays — 1:37 p.m.
Logan Gilbert against Max Scherzer creates a sizable starting-pitching advantage for Seattle, but the Mariners are laying road money after Toronto rallied to win Saturday.
Seattle is the preferred side, but not enough to make the card.
🟡 LEAN: Seattle ML
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: Tampa Bay Rays ML vs. San Diego Padres — 1:40 p.m.
This one clears the bar for me.
Tampa Bay is 81-54, while Drew Rasmussen enters 14-5 with a 2.95 ERA. San Diego counters with Robbie Ray at 11-7 with a 3.21 ERA.
The Rays also won Saturday and have the combination we want: better overall team, strong home starter and current momentum.
San Diego is good enough that this is not a layup, but Tampa around -160/-170 is playable.
Play: Tampa Bay Rays ML
Classification: 🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Guardians — 1:40 p.m.
This is one of the most interesting games on the board.
Cleveland has the better starter with Parker Messick at 10-8 with a 2.50 ERA, compared with Seth Lugo at 6-7 with a 4.61 ERA.
But Kansas City has been one of baseball’s hottest teams and has already taken the series. The Royals entered the weekend 9-1 over their previous ten and have continued rolling.
That creates a direct conflict between our dominant-starter angle and our hot-team rule.
🟡 STRONG LEAN: Cleveland ML
Not Official because we are not casually stepping in front of Kansas City’s form.
Los Angeles Dodgers at Detroit Tigers — 1:40 p.m.
The Dodgers have dropped two tight games in Detroit, including Saturday’s 2-1 walk-off loss. The market favors Los Angeles, but the matchup is not clean enough to lay the road price.
🔴 PASS
Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins — 2:10 p.m.
Chicago has taken the first two games of this series. Minnesota is only a small favorite and has not shown enough to justify stepping in simply because they are home on Sunday.
🔴 PASS
🟡 VERY STRONG LEAN: Milwaukee Brewers ML vs. Texas Rangers — 2:10 p.m.
Milwaukee is now 84-51 and has taken the first two games of this series. Texas has lost four straight and has fallen below .500.
The pitching matchup is not dominant — Kumar Rocker versus Dustin May — but Milwaukee has the better club, stronger bullpen and the form advantage.
At roughly -160, I like Milwaukee a lot.
What keeps it barely below Official is the lack of a meaningful starting-pitching edge.
🟡 VERY STRONG LEAN: Brewers ML
Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals — 2:15 p.m.
Pittsburgh is near a pick’em with Braxton Ashcraft scheduled, while St. Louis has been inconsistent and has injury issues.
There is not enough here for us.
🔴 PASS
Houston Astros at New York Mets — 3:10 p.m.
The Mets took Saturday’s game 6-2 and are a small home favorite. Houston and New York are both inconsistent enough that the near-pick’em market looks about right.
🔴 PASS
Baltimore Orioles at Athletics — 4:05 p.m.
Baltimore has won the first two games of the series, but laying around -140/-150 on the road without a larger starting-pitching edge is not necessary.
🟡 LEAN: Baltimore ML
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY: Philadelphia Phillies ML at Los Angeles Angels — 4:07 p.m.
This is the other spot I want on the official ledger.
Philadelphia has won 12 of its last 14, while the Angels have lost six straight.
And the starting-pitching matchup is substantial:
Zack Wheeler: 10-5, 3.40 ERA
Yusei Kikuchi: 0-4, 6.25 ERA
This hits multiple Square Tax filters at once: strong starter, hot team, fade the cold team.
The price around -165/-175 on your board is entirely reasonable for this matchup.
Play: Philadelphia Phillies ML
Classification: 🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs — 7:20 p.m.
Chicago exploded for 17 runs Saturday after dropping the opener. The Cubs are favored around -140/-155, but one offensive eruption does not erase the inconsistency we have seen recently.
🔴 PASS
🏀 WNBA
Minnesota Lynx at Atlanta Dream — 3:00 p.m.
Minnesota is laying only around 1.5-2.5, which immediately tells us this is not being priced as a normal Lynx matchup.
Atlanta has played Minnesota well recently, while Minnesota is dealing with some availability issues heading into the World Cup break. Courtney Williams may return, but Dorka Juhász and Antonia Delaere remain unavailable.
I do not want to lay points with Minnesota in this particular spot.
🟡 LEAN: Atlanta +2.5
Los Angeles Sparks at Seattle Storm — 5:00 p.m.
Los Angeles is a slight road favorite after rallying from 17 down to beat Washington on Friday.
Seattle has struggled badly this season, but this is also an emotional home game with significant personnel/storyline factors around the World Cup break.
The Sparks are the better current team, but laying road points does not clear the threshold.
🟡 STRONG LEAN: Los Angeles Sparks -1.5
🟡 VERY STRONG LEAN: Golden State Valkyries -5.5 at Portland Fire — 7:00 p.m.
Golden State has been playing excellent defense and enters this spot with momentum, while Portland has been inconsistent.
The concern is international-duty absences ahead of the World Cup break, which is why I do not want to make it Official at -5.5.
Still, Golden State is the substantially better team.
🟡 VERY STRONG LEAN: Golden State -5.5
🟡 VERY STRONG LEAN: Dallas Wings -14.5 vs. Connecticut Sun — 8:30 p.m.
The number is enormous, but the matchup deserves attention.
Dallas has won three straight, clinched a playoff berth and set a franchise wins record. Paige Bueckers continues to drive the late-season surge. Connecticut sits at 10-29 and remains one of the league’s weakest teams.
Fourteen and a half is simply too large for me to put on the Official ledger, particularly with Dallas missing Azzi Fudd.
But the side is clear.
🟡 VERY STRONG LEAN: Dallas -14.5
TODAY’S OFFICIAL CARD
🟢 Atlanta Braves ML
🟢 Tampa Bay Rays ML

Very Strong Leans
🟡 Milwaukee Brewers ML
🟡 Golden State Valkyries -5.5
🟡 Dallas Wings -14.5
Strong Leans
🟡 Cleveland Guardians ML
🟡 Los Angeles Sparks -1.5
That is enough for a Sunday card.
No chasing 6-10. No trying to repair the week in one afternoon. Three Official Plays that fit the process, then let the results fall where they fall.
🏈 FOOTBALL IS HERE
NFL preseason is finally finished.
We closed that segment 2-7, and we are keeping it separate from the regular-season NFL ledger.
The regular-season board is already up, and early numbers are already on the Market Watch. This week we begin tracking the games that matter — full starters, real game plans, real rotations and sixteen games maximum instead of trying to sift through an enormous college board.
College football will also receive the same opening-line treatment as the Week 1 market develops.
📘 STOP BETTING THE LOGO
Football season is officially here.
That means the lessons in Stop Betting the Logo: The Square Tax Guide to Betting College Football With Discipline, Value and a Repeatable Process become more important every week.
One of the core principles:
The goal is not to bet more college football. The goal is to bet college football better.
