THE SQUARE TAX
DAILY TAX REPORT
Tuesday, August 18, 2026
Two Official Plays. The late market gave us a better Yankees number while Atlanta remains playable.
Odds reference: Morning board captured from Scores & Odds at 8:37 a.m. ET, with updated lines checked again before publication. Lines can move quickly, so always shop for the best available number.
Tightened-System Record: 6–5
Last night finished 1–1.
The Cubs team total cashed, while St. Louis lost Game 2 of the doubleheader in extra innings.
That brings the tightened process to 6–5.
We stay with the same approach: no forced volume, no chasing, and no Official Play unless the matchup, price and supporting factors all line up.
Tonight, two plays survived the process.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
New York Yankees ML -106
This number actually improved for us during the day.
The Yankees were -112 on our 8:37 a.m. board. Instead of getting more expensive, the late number has dropped to -106.
That gives us a better price on a side we already liked.
New York has the stronger overall profile, and we prefer the Yankees' setup enough at essentially even money to make this one of tonight's two Official Plays.
Official Play: Yankees ML -106
Playable to: -115
If you can find anything better than -106, take it.
🟢 OFFICIAL PLAY
Atlanta Braves ML -129
Atlanta was -124 on our morning board and has moved slightly against us to -129.
Unlike some of the larger moves we've discussed recently, five cents is not enough to destroy the value.
We still prefer Atlanta's overall setup and believe the Braves remain worth backing at the current price.
The important distinction is that we're now near the edge of what we're willing to pay.
Official Play: Braves ML -129
Playable to: -130
If Atlanta moves beyond that, do not chase.
🟡 STRONG LEAN
Kansas City Royals ML
Kansas City was one of the more interesting spots on the morning board at approximately -133.
The matchup was attractive enough at that price to put the Royals close to Official Play territory.
But the market moved substantially.
Once the price pushed well beyond the morning number, the value changed.
We may still like Kansas City to win the game, but liking a team and liking the wager are not always the same thing.
Strong Lean only.
If you somehow still have something close to the morning -133, it becomes considerably more interesting.
At a heavily inflated price, we pass.
🟡 LEAN
Milwaukee Brewers ML
Milwaukee has enough advantages to remain interesting, but the pitching matchup does not provide the separation we need for an Official Play.
There is nothing wrong with liking a side and still deciding the edge isn't strong enough to put money behind it.
Lean: Milwaukee ML
🟡 LEAN
St. Louis Cardinals ML
Yesterday's extra-inning loss has no effect on today's handicap.
Today's matchup is a completely separate event.
St. Louis remains attractive at a reasonable number, but the case does not reach the same level as New York or Atlanta.
Lean: Cardinals ML
WNBA
🟡 LEAN
Los Angeles Sparks
The Sparks remain the most interesting WNBA side on tonight's board.
However, the market has already moved in their direction, and injury uncertainty keeps this below Official Play status.
Lean: Los Angeles Sparks
🔴 PASS
Indiana Fever at Toronto
Indiana may very well be the correct side, but the spread has moved far enough that much of the value that existed earlier has already been absorbed by the market.
We do not chase.
Pass.
🔴 PASS
New York Liberty at Chicago Sky
There are enough injury and lineup questions surrounding this matchup that we don't have the clean setup required for an Official Play.
Pass.
🔴 PASS
Atlanta Dream at Las Vegas Aces
There are arguments for both sides, but not enough separation at the available number.
Pass.
MLB PASSES
Miami at Philadelphia
Philadelphia has the stronger starting-pitching setup, but the moneyline price is too expensive for what we're getting.
Pass.
San Francisco at Cleveland
Cleveland has a legitimate pitching advantage, but the market has priced it accordingly.
Pass.
Detroit at Pittsburgh
We do not see enough separation between the two sides or starting-pitching setups to justify action.
Pass.
San Diego at New York Mets
There are legitimate arguments for both starting pitchers, but nothing strong enough to create an edge at the current number.
Pass.
Arizona at Boston
Boston may have the better setup on paper, but the price removes much of the value.
Pass.
White Sox at Cubs
Chicago is favored for a reason, but we're not interested in paying the required price tonight.
Pass.
Angels at Houston
There are too many concerns with the pitching setup to justify laying Houston juice.
Pass.
Dodgers at Rockies
Coors Field always creates offensive temptation, but the market knows that too.
With the total already accounting for an expected high-scoring environment, we do not have enough edge to force an Over.
Pass.
TONIGHT'S CARD
🟢 Yankees ML -106
🟢 Braves ML -129
🟡 Strong Lean: Royals ML — only attractive near the morning price
🟡 Lean: Brewers ML
🟡 Lean: Cardinals ML
🟡 Lean: Los Angeles Sparks
Everything else: Pass.
THE NUMBER MATTERS — AGAIN
Today's Yankees line gives us the opposite example of what happened with Kansas City.
We wrote down:
Yankees -112
The late market gave us:
Yankees -106
Our opinion of the game did not change.
The price simply got better.
So we take advantage of it.
Atlanta moved the other direction:
Morning: Braves -124
Updated: Braves -129
That is slightly worse, but still inside our playable range.
Kansas City moved much farther away from its attractive morning price, so we downgraded rather than chase.
Three different line movements.
Three different decisions.
That is why we record the board early.
Handicapping tells us what we like.
The market tells us whether the price is still worth paying.
BANKROLL REMINDER
The tightened process sits at 6–5.
Tonight gives us two Official Plays.
That does not mean we increase our wager size because the card is short, and it does not mean we add marginal plays because we want more action.
Two qualified bets are better than six forced ones.
Shop the number. Protect the bankroll. Never chase.
