College basketball is back, the NBA has a full slate, hockey offers several intriguing matchups, and the Chicago Bears visit the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.

Tonight, we're giving readers one free selection, along with our breakdowns of the games that have our attention.

🟢 TONIGHT'S FREE PLAY

Purdue vs. Gonzaga — UNDER 155.5

Playable at 155.5 or better.

Opening night brings uncertainty, particularly for teams replacing important contributors.

Purdue enters this matchup with questions surrounding its rebuilt backcourt. Gonzaga has the talent to push the pace, but the Boilermakers should have an incentive to make this a more deliberate, half-court contest.

We see a reasonable path to fewer possessions than the market expects, especially if both teams spend the early minutes settling into their offensive rotations.

🏈 MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

Chicago Bears at Seattle Seahawks

Seattle −3.5 | Total 46.5

Seattle has the home-field advantage and enters this matchup playing impressive football.

Chicago, however, is no pushover. Caleb Williams and the Bears have been playing well, and their defensive front presents a legitimate challenge.

The Seahawks are appealing, but the difference between laying three and laying three-and-a-half points matters.

Our assessment: Strong Lean Seattle −3.5.

As for the total, 46.5 leaves us without a convincing advantage in either direction.

Total: PASS.

🏀 NBA — THE BACK-TO-BACK FACTOR

One of our major research projects this season is examining how NBA teams perform against the spread on the second night of back-to-back games.

Four teams fit that situation tonight:

Boston Celtics at Houston Rockets

Boston played Sunday and must travel to Houston. The Rockets have an opportunity to take advantage of tired legs, but their own frontcourt availability deserves attention.

Brooklyn Nets at New York Knicks

Brooklyn also played Sunday. The Knicks are laying a substantial number, making this an interesting test of whether the market has overcorrected for the Nets' difficult schedule.

Toronto Raptors at Los Angeles Clippers

Toronto played the Lakers Sunday and now faces the Clippers. The Raptors avoid a major travel day, but consecutive games against Los Angeles opponents still test their depth and stamina.

Miami Heat at Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers are also on the second night of a back-to-back after hosting Toronto. Miami's freshness could become important as the game progresses.

Our focus: Fatigue matters, but the point spread matters more. A tired team can still cover an inflated number.

🏀 COLLEGE BASKETBALL — OPENING-NIGHT WATCHLIST

UCLA vs. Arizona

A high-profile matchup where perimeter defense, rebounding and early-season chemistry should determine whether Arizona can justify its favored status.

Ohio State vs. BYU

BYU is favored, but this is the kind of competitive opening-night matchup where a few possessions could decide the spread.

Illinois State vs. Saint Mary's

Saint Mary's traditionally rewards disciplined basketball. We're particularly interested in whether the game develops at a controlled tempo.

Memphis vs. Iowa State

Iowa State is laying a substantial number. The question isn't simply whether the Cyclones win, but whether they maintain enough intensity to cover a large spread.

Opening night is an opportunity to gather information, not an excuse to bet every game.

🏒 NHL — GAMES ON OUR RADAR

Vegas Golden Knights at Boston Bruins

A potentially entertaining matchup between capable offensive teams. The total of 6.5 deserves monitoring, but we're not forcing a play.

Colorado Avalanche at Chicago Blackhawks

Colorado has the stronger roster on paper. The question is whether the moneyline or puck-line pricing offers reasonable value.

Detroit Red Wings at Florida Panthers

Florida is favored at home, but Detroit's underdog price deserves examination before dismissing the Red Wings.

THE BOTTOM LINE

One free play tonight. Plenty of games worth watching. No reason to manufacture action.
