Saturday Football Is Here. Let's Get to Work.

It's Halloween, and college football has a full slate of intriguing matchups, rivalry games, ranked opponents, and potentially dangerous favorites.

At The Square Tax, we don't automatically back the better-ranked team. We look at the matchup, the market, the number, and the circumstances surrounding the game.

Here's our early and afternoon rundown, covering kickoff times through 6:30 PM Eastern.

THE NOON WINDOW

No. 19 SMU at Syracuse — Noon ET

SMU enters as the ranked team, but conference road games are rarely automatic. Syracuse gets the home atmosphere and will need to find ways to disrupt SMU's offensive rhythm.

What we're watching: SMU's early-down efficiency, Syracuse's ability to limit explosive plays, and whether the home team can establish a manageable game script.

No. 22 Arizona at No. 13 Texas Tech — Noon ET

One of the day's most interesting ranked matchups. Arizona's passing attack will be tested against a Texas Tech team looking to defend its home field and control the pace.

What we're watching: Quarterback efficiency, turnovers, and which offense handles pressure better. Close games often come down to a handful of possessions rather than the rankings.

California at NC State — Noon ET

NC State gets a home opportunity against a California team facing another demanding road assignment. The Wolfpack need offensive consistency and an ability to finish drives.

What we're watching: NC State's red-zone execution, California's offensive protection, and whether turnovers create short fields.

No. 25 Wisconsin at Iowa — Noon ET

This has all the ingredients of a physical Big Ten battle. Field position, special teams, defensive discipline, and third-down execution could decide it.

What we're watching: Turnover margin, offensive-line play, and which team can create something explosive in a matchup where sustained drives may be difficult.

No. 5 Notre Dame vs. Navy — Noon ET

Navy presents a different kind of preparation challenge. Notre Dame must remain disciplined against the option-oriented attack and avoid allowing lengthy possessions to shorten the contest.

What we're watching: Assignment football, possession count, and whether Notre Dame creates early separation.

Illinois at Maryland — Noon ET

An intriguing Big Ten matchup with both teams trying to establish control at the line of scrimmage.

What we're watching: The Illinois running game, Maryland's defensive response, and how often either offense finds itself behind the chains.

Boston College at Duke — Noon ET

Execution takes center stage in this ACC matchup. Neither side can afford to give away possessions through turnovers or special-teams mistakes.

What we're watching: Third-down conversions, protection, and red-zone efficiency.

UAB at South Florida — Noon ET

South Florida gets a home opportunity against UAB. The key is whether the home side controls tempo or allows the visitor to settle into the game.

What we're watching: Explosive plays, defensive tackling, and early possessions.

EARLY AFTERNOON

Auburn at No. 12 Ole Miss — 12:45 PM ET

Auburn heads into a difficult SEC road environment. Ole Miss has the offensive ceiling to create separation, but Auburn's mobility at quarterback presents a challenge for defenders.

What we're watching: Auburn's rushing production, Ole Miss's offensive balance, and whether the Rebels can consistently finish possessions.

Kansas State at Colorado — 2 PM ET

An important Big 12 matchup where quarterback execution and field position could matter enormously.

What we're watching: Which team protects the football, wins on first down, and establishes consistency against pressure.

Temple at East Carolina — 3 PM ET

East Carolina returns home for an American Conference contest. Temple needs disciplined defense and sustained offensive production to compete.

What we're watching: The line of scrimmage, turnovers, and special-teams opportunities.

Stanford at Louisville — 3:15 PM ET

Louisville has an opportunity to dictate the game at home, but Stanford's ability to extend drives and avoid mistakes will determine whether this stays competitive.

What we're watching: Louisville's defensive pressure and Stanford's response on passing downs.

THE 3:30–4:15 PM WINDOW

No. 17 Florida vs. No. 3 Georgia — 3:30 PM ET

Forget the records for a moment. This rivalry carries its own intensity.

Georgia brings championship-level expectations into the matchup, while Florida has every incentive to make the Bulldogs uncomfortable in a neutral-site rivalry.

What we're watching: Quarterback decision-making, defensive pressure, and the turnover battle. Rivalry games are often decided by mistakes rather than reputation.

Northwestern at Oregon — 3:30 PM ET

Oregon gets the home setting, but the question is whether Northwestern can control possession and limit explosive opportunities.

What we're watching: Oregon's tempo, Northwestern's defensive discipline, and the battle for field position.

Arizona State at BYU — 3:30 PM ET

Big 12 football offers another compelling afternoon matchup. Playing at BYU creates a significant challenge for visitors.

What we're watching: Quarterback efficiency, red-zone execution, and the ability to handle pressure in a difficult road environment.

Minnesota at Indiana — 3:30 PM ET

Both sides need efficient offensive possessions in this Big Ten contest.

What we're watching: Minnesota's ability to establish the run and Indiana's response when forced into longer drives.

Kansas at TCU — 3:30 PM ET

The Big 12 matchup puts a premium on defensive execution against versatile offensive personnel.

What we're watching: Explosive plays, rushing efficiency, and late-down conversions.

Utah at Cincinnati — 3:45 PM ET

Utah travels east for a Big 12 challenge against Cincinnati. The Bearcats will need to match Utah's physicality and avoid allowing the visitors to control the line of scrimmage.

What we're watching: The rushing matchup, third downs, and whether either team gains a decisive field-position advantage.

Virginia at Wake Forest — 3:45 PM ET

An ACC matchup that could be influenced heavily by availability, protection, and quarterback play.

What we're watching: Virginia's offensive consistency, Wake Forest's defensive response, and the turnover battle.

South Carolina at Oklahoma — 4:15 PM ET

This is one of our favorite games to study from a pure football perspective.

Oklahoma brings an elite defensive unit into the contest, but the Sooners' offense has struggled to produce consistently. South Carolina has an opportunity to challenge that defense with quarterback mobility and offensive creativity.

What we're watching: Oklahoma's pass rush, South Carolina's protection, and whether either offense can consistently finish drives. Field position may prove crucial.

Purdue at Penn State — 4:15 PM ET

Penn State gets the home-field advantage against Purdue in a Big Ten matchup.

What we're watching: The Nittany Lions' offensive execution, Purdue's ability to sustain drives, and whether the visitors can avoid early mistakes.

THE LATE-AFTERNOON WINDOW

Appalachian State at Georgia Southern — 6:30 PM ET

A Sun Belt matchup to close our early report. Familiar conference opponents often produce interesting tactical battles.

What we're watching: Tempo, defensive adjustments, and which side controls the line of scrimmage.

THE SQUARE TAX PHILOSOPHY

A ranked team isn't automatically a good bet.

A big favorite isn't automatically overpriced.

And an underdog isn't valuable simply because it's getting points.

The number matters. The matchup matters. The price matters.

That's how we approach every card.
